Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Ultrafast pulsed fiber laser technologies combine the advantages of ultrafast pulsed laser and fiber laser approaches. Pulsed laser technologies are known for their high repetition rate, small pulse width and high peak power. Fiber laser systems are preferred for their simplicity, flexibility and excellent beam quality. Pulsed fiber lasers can not only deliver energy in a controllable fashion, but also transmit information accurately. Consequently, they have a wide variety of applications in optical communication, environment monitoring, spectroscopy, material processing, biomedicine and other fields.

Currently, there is a need for further investigations into the performance and applications of ultrafast pulsed fiber lasers. In terms of performance, pulse quality can be improved by studying laser components and discovering solutions. For example, there is at times a need to discover appropriate materials to serve as saturable absorbers, which are essential in pulse shaping. Laser parameters, including wavelength, must be tunable to find wider application. The improvement of laser performance may also involve exploration of laser theories. Enabled by its characteristics, ultrafast fiber laser has been adopted in a variety of different technologies, each of which has its own difficulties to be overcome. For example, optical frequency comb based on ultrafast laser is used in measurement and sensing, and it is crucial to improve the precision and resolution of this approach by finding better designs.

This Special Issue aims to present an informative and inspiring collection of articles on the subject of ultrafast pulsed fiber lasers and applications. Research reports and reviews are both welcomed, and researchers are generally invited to submit their work to this Special Issue. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Laser photonics;
  • Fiber optics;
  • Soliton lasers;
  • Frequency combs;
  • Saturable absorbers;
  • Laser absorption spectroscopy;
  • Supercontinuum generation;
  • Laser medicine;
