Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

the recent advances in optical sources have opened up new opportunities for gas and liquid sensing based photoacoustic spectroscopy. This technique combines the high selectivity provided by the spectral characteristics of laser sources with the possibility of avoiding the use of any optical detector. In particular, quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy has been recently exploited for developing sensitive gas detectors and to study energy relaxation mechanisms in optically excited gases.

Photoacoustic spectroscopy and quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy have recently branched out to various fields of application, including liquid and gas sensing for environmental monitoring, multi-gas detection, leak detection, breath sensing, homeland security, petrochemical exploration, leading researchers to design and develop sensors architecture for on-filed applications.

This Special Issue of Sensors, entitled “Photoacoustic Spectroscopy and Sensors”, will focus on all aspects of the research and development related to these areas. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Photoacoustic spectroscopy for gas or liquid sensing
  • Quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy for gas sensing
  • Laser sources for photoacoustic spectroscopy and quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (laser diodes, interband cascade lasers, distributed-feedback quantum cascade lasers, external-cavity quantum cascade lasers, Vernier lasers, frequency comb quantum cascade lasers, fiber lasers, etc.)
  • Sensing mechanisms
  • Photoacoustic sensors (downscaling, design, modelling and development) for on-field applications
  • Application areas such as environmental monitoring, combustion, waste water, industrial process monitoring, workplace safety, agriculture and food science, security (particularly explosive detection), biological, medical such as breath analysis, petrochemistry and oil&gas exploration, etc.

Original research papers that focus on the design and experimental verification of new sensors based on photoacoustic spectroscopy and quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy, as well as papers that focus on their field-testing, are welcome. Both reviews and original research articles will be published. Reviews should provide an up-to-date, well-balanced overview of the current state-of-the-art and include main results from other groups. We look forward to, and welcome, your participation in this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.

For certain diseases, the continuous long-term monitoring of the physiological condition is crucial. Therefore, non-invasive monitoring methods have attracted widespread attention in health care. This review aims to discuss the non-invasive monitoring technologies for human health based on photoacoustic spectroscopy. First, the theoretical basis of photoacoustic spectroscopy and related devices are reported. Furthermore, this article introduces the monitoring methods for blood glucose, blood oxygen, lipid, and tumors, including differential continuous-wave photoacoustic spectroscopy, microscopic photoacoustic spectroscopy, mid-infrared photoacoustic detection, wavelength-modulated differential photoacoustic spectroscopy, and others. Finally, we present the limitations and prospects of photoacoustic spectroscopy. Full article
