Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainable engineering aims to minimize environmental impacts across the entire lifecycle of engineering activities, while simultaneously maximizing the benefits to social and economic stakeholders. It involves many different influencing factors such as environment, economy, and society, and makes decision makers easy to fall into the dilemma of decision-making. In complex systems, multiple-criteria decision-making methods represent a powerful theoretical tool. The rational use of this tool will help decision-makers overcome the current decision-making dilemma in sustainable engineering.

This Special Issue seeks to collate the work of scientists, practitioners, innovators, and entrepreneurs who are in a position to offer valuable perspectives on the particular research area of multiple-criteria decision making in sustainable engineering.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:

The resource allocation of commercial banks is a multiple-criteria decision-making issue with complex internal structure, and traditional inverse data envelopment analysis cannot meet its decision-making needs. A two-stage structure with undesirable outputs is constructed to describe the operations of a Chinese commercial bank, and then a new two-stage inverse data envelopment analysis with undesirable outputs is proposed to address its resource allocation multiple criteria decision-making issue. The new method can be used to calculate the minimum input increment required to achieve the goals of desirable and undesirable output under a certain efficiency, and then a specific resource allocation plan can be obtained to promote the sustainable development of commercial banks. Finally, the new method is applied to the resource allocation of 16 Chinese listed commercial banks in 2013, and the application results fully demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method. In the past decade, sustainable supply chain management has received much attention from practitioners and academics due to the heightened emphasis on environmental, economic, and social sustainability by customers, for-profit and non-profit institutions, community organizations, legislation, and government oversight. Evaluating and selecting a suitable supplier is considered a critical choice, crucial in supply chain management. Social sustainability in the supplier selection process is an important factor that has not received sufficient attention from academicians. Social and societal challenges are increasingly impacting supply chains. To tackle this challenge in the agricultural section of nations with emerging economies, this study proposed a new methodology using Grey FUCOM (Full Consistency Method) and Gray PROMTHEE (Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluation) methods for evaluating the social sustainability of wheat and barley seed production companies. This study assists seed users in identifying the most significant supplier selection criteria and one of the most effective suppliers for ecological sustainability throughout the supply chain while maintaining market competitiveness. The results demonstrated a consistent and dependable rating behavior about the weight coefficients of the criteria. Improving the procedures used to evaluate wheat and barley seed suppliers results in a healthier society. So, the proposed model can efficiently evaluate a critical component of the food supply chain in the early stages. Full article

Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are key contributors to Indonesia’s economy. E-commerce can assist SMEs in gaining a competitive edge and is expected to be the largest contributor to the country’s digital economy by 2030. However, only 22% of SMEs in Indonesia have adopted E-commerce. Hence this study aims to investigate the criteria that influence E-commerce adoption by Indonesian retail SMEs and select the best strategy using the Decision-Makers, Technological, Organizational, and Environmental (DTOE) Framework and the Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory. This study aims to fill the research gap by examining the essential factors in E-commerce adoption by Indonesian SMEs in the retail industry and their key strategy to increase utilization. The influence and priorities between criteria were calculated using the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) based Analytic Network Process (ANP) method. Furthermore, an E-commerce adoption strategy was selected using Complex Proportional Assessment (COPRAS) method. This research showed critical criteria for adopting E-commerce technology in retail SMEs, Decision Maker’s IT Knowledge, Innovativeness, and Complexity. In addition, developing or training Information Technology (IT) and E-commerce skills were identified as the best strategy to increase E-commerce adoption. This study can help raise the understanding of policymakers, E-commerce service providers, and retail SME decision-makers on influencing criteria in adopting the best strategy to be applied to increase this technology adoption. The cost of constructing foundations, on average, ranges from 10% to 15% of a project’s total cost. Therefore, selecting the appropriate type of foundation may result in a significant reduction in project costs. In this study, a value engineering (VE) approach was applied to select the best foundation type from seven alternatives that covered shallow and deep foundations. Selection was dependent on ten important criteria, which were classified into safety, buildability, flexibility of architectural design, and environmental impact. Foundation construction experts used the stepwise weight assessment ratio analysis (SWARA) method to determine the weights of these ten properties for six identified cases based on structure type and soil type. In addition, the weighted aggregated sum product assessment (WASPAS) method was used to determine the quality weight for each foundation option. The results show that adaptable architectural design requirements were more critical in selecting the foundation than the safety criteria for a bridge project. Additionally, the criteria for environmental impacts in the case of high-rise buildings have a more significant impact on foundation choice than low-rise buildings. The outcomes of this study may improve the adaptability of architectural design and the environmental impact of future structures and building codes in the construction industry. Full article

With the advancement of technology and the development of intelligence, self-balancing scooters have gradually developed in the field of short-distance travel and have become a fashionable, popular and leisure means of transportation. In addition, both the export of self-balancing scooters and their safety are closely related to their core patents. Therefore, in order to promote the healthy development of the self-balancing automobile industry, this paper carries out the following research: First, we introduce the background of the self-balancing automobile patent and the research status of patent value evaluation at home and abroad. Then, considering the fuzziness of decision makers’ thinking and the uncertainty of patent indicators, this paper extends the traditional TOPSIS method to the field of triangular fuzzy numbers (TFNs), and proposes a TFN-TOPSIS multi-criteria decision model based on the possibility degree relationship model. In addition, this study establishes a core patent value system using three aspects of technology, law and economy, and applies the TFN-TOPSIS model to the top 20 balanced car patents with the highest comprehensive evaluation to rank and analyze the measurement results. On this basis, this paper provides reference opinions for relevant industry personnel from the aspects of future product technology updates and patent layouts. Full article
