Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Business model innovation has seen a recent surge in academic research and business practice. Innovation of business models is recognized as a fundamental approach to realize continuous challenges for corporate sustainability. Most of studies examine bodies of literature on business model innovation, sustainability innovation, network theory, stakeholder theory, and product–service systems. Therefore, we hereby expect to explore the development of a unified theoretical perspective for understanding business model innovation that leads to better organizational, economic, environmental, and social performance, and furthermore, to reveal what, who, where, when, and how the advance in business model innovation can improve the vitality and creativity of enterprises. 

The way business is often conducted within industrial value chains is being revolutionized through the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, intensive data exchange, predictive analytics, and so on. However, the advance in business model innovation is not just limited to technological application (e.g., digitalization), but also needs to recognize the importance of making the transition to advanced business service. Integrating innovative business models into organizational strategy system can help enterprises to produce a competitive advantage. Regarding corporate sustainability and long-term prosperity, the author(s) can provide a broad, dynamic approach to business models that are compatible with strategic management involved in analyzing, formulating, and implementing advanced innovations with economic competitiveness, social responsibility, and that are in balance with the changing nature of business.

Therefore, the main purpose of this Special Issue is to highlight the mutual effect of business model innovation and corporate sustainability from various perspectives. This Special Issue seeks a wide range of contributions that assess how current business circumstances influence and shape the sustainability of organizations. The objective of this Special Issue is to publish high-quality papers that contribute to promoting our understanding of the diversity of changes and advances in business model , and it will innovate management and environmental practices. The Special Issue is open to both conceptual studies and empirical analyses based on qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches.

With today’s global challenges such as geopolitical instability, environmental threats and social crises, corporate sustainability and transparency are becoming key elements of efficient governance. This study aims to examine the impact of the sustainability of business models of the largest Ukrainian enterprises on their financial results in the period before the military conflict started. This study tested the hypothesis that in the Ukrainian context, corporate sustainability and transparency have an insignificant positive impact on the efficiency of the implementation of business models of enterprises. The author’s methodology made it possible to assess the sustainability of the business models of 40 enterprises by calculating an integral indicator for 21 areas with significant ESG issues and classify enterprises according to the levels of sustainability and efficiency of their business models using a specially developed scale. Correlation and regression analyses were used to quantify the degree of influence of corporate sustainability and transparency. The results of the analyses demonstrated a weak positive correlation between financial results and sustainability and transparency indicators, which emphasizes the need to develop a unified methodology to assess corporate sustainability for Ukrainian enterprises that can be adapted for countries with transition economies and similar political landscapes. This study makes a theoretical contribution by proposing an approach to assessing corporate sustainability based on integral indicators. This article is of interest to stakeholders involved in sustainable development, outlines directions for further research to support socially responsible business practices of enterprises, and emphasizes the need for further empirical research on factors affecting corporate sustainability and transparency. Strategic entrepreneurship behaviors enhance business performance and sustainability in Turkish SMEs by fostering innovation and leveraging competitive intensity for sustained growth. Employing strategic leadership theory, this study examines the effect of strategic entrepreneurial behaviors on business performance through the mediation role of business model innovation (BMI) and the moderation effect of competitive intensity. A quantitative approach was used, and data from 313 managers and business owners in Turkish small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were collected using a structured questionnaire. The results have shown that strategic entrepreneurial behavior significantly and positively impacts business performance and business model innovation. Business model innovation, in turn, positively affects business performance. Competitive intensity moderates the relationship between strategic entrepreneurial behavior and business model innovation, strengthening it under higher competitive pressure levels. However, competitive intensity does not moderate the direct link between strategic entrepreneurial behavior and business performance. At higher levels of competitive intensity, the conditional indirect effect of strategic entrepreneurial behavior on business performance through business model innovation becomes more prominent. The findings of this study offer actionable insights for enhancing SME performance through strategic entrepreneurship, innovative business models, and competitive strategy adaptation. Full article

This study, using the Technology Acceptance Model and Innovation Diffusion Theory, utilizes datasets from A-share manufacturing companies listed on China’s stock exchange from 2010 to 2022 to examine the impact of smart manufacturing on the dimensions of enterprise breakthrough innovation and the moderating role of service-oriented transformation. The findings reveal a “U-shaped” relationship between smart manufacturing and the width of breakthrough innovation, and an inverted “U-shaped” relationship between smart manufacturing and the depth of breakthrough innovation. Furthermore, enterprises’ service-oriented transformation positively moderates these relationships. This study is limited by its focus on Chinese listed companies, which may restrict the generalizability of the results to other regions. Future research should consider a broader sample, to validate and extend these findings. Nevertheless, the research findings provide a theoretical basis and practical insights for enterprises’ intelligent transformation and service transformation, promoting enterprise breakthrough innovation. Mankind’s consumption exceeds our natural resources, so among other things, the development of new business models at the company level is needed. This paper aims to generate systematic business model innovations in the field of fast-moving consumer goods using business model patterns to foster sustainability. Based on a literature search, the most relevant patterns for the industry are identified as part of a multi-stage selection process that is based on the value generated by the patterns. Expert surveys are the central instrument for data collection. Here, the connection of the patterns to the strategy is central. The result is a list of relevant patterns, which includes patterns from completely external industries. This is the first evaluation of its kind, which shows that patterns focusing only on the circular economy are not enough to succeed and, therefore, break the scientific paradigm. Full article

How Does Digital Transformation Improve Corporate Carbon Emission Reduction Performance? An Empirical Study on Data from Listed Companies in China

Against the backdrop of global carbon reduction, China, as the country with the highest carbon emissions, must implement carbon reduction actions more efficiently to promote the sustainable development of the global environment. Balancing their economic and environmental benefits has become an important issue for corporations, as they are crucial entities in the final implementation of carbon reduction efforts. This study selects the data of listed companies in China from 2012 to 2022 and develops a two-way fixed-effects model to verify the effect of digital transformation on corporate carbon reduction performance. The study found that digital transformation can positively promote corporate carbon reduction performance and shows heterogeneity under different conditions. Green technology innovation plays a mediating role in the relationship between digital transformation and corporate carbon reduction performance. Furthermore, environmental subsidies play a positive moderating role in the relationship between digital transformation and green technology innovation, constituting a moderated mediation model. Meanwhile, tax reduction incentives play a positive moderating role in the relationship between digital transformation and promoting corporate carbon reduction performance. This study provides empirical suggestions for balancing economic and environmental benefits for 5323 Chinese listed companies and global corporations from both internal and external perspectives, emphasizing the potential for digital transformation to drive both commercial success and environmental stewardship in the pursuit of sustainable development goals. While there is burgeoning interest in the influence of human resource management (HRM) on sustainability organizational outcomes (SOO), the intricate interplay with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) has not yet been explored, particularly in manufacturing firms’ contexts. Therefore, this study aims to probe the symbiotic relationship between HRM practices, OHS, and SOO, spotlighting manufacturing firms. Data collection was conducted by utilizing a cross-sectional survey, convenience sampling technique, and a web-based form among the 256 respondents from an industrial company (Balexco) in Bahrain. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) by Smart-PLS was used to analyze the collected data. Our analysis highlighted a significant positive relationship between HRM, SOO, and OHS. Moreover, this study highlighted the dual impact of direct and indirect HRM on SOO, mediated by OHS. These multi-layered insights reinforce the assumption that a comprehensive approach to HRM, aligning performance aspirations with employee well-being, is instrumental in improving SOO. This study is a novel contribution to the literature because, by uncovering the intricate interplay of HRM, OHS, and SOO, practical implications and limitations were provided. Full article

In recent years, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) has become a critical indicator for evaluating sustainable companies. However, the actual logic used for ESG score calculation remains exclusive to rating agencies. Therefore, with the advancement of AI, using machine learning to establish a reliable ESG score prediction model is a topic worth exploring. This study aims to build ESG score prediction models for the non-financial industry in Taiwan using random forest (RF), Extreme Learning Machines (ELM), support vector machine (SVM), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and investigates whether the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the accuracy of these models. The dependent variable is the Taiwan ESG Sustainable Development Index, while the independent variables are 27 financial metrics and corporate governance indicators with three parts: pre-pandemic, pandemic, and the entire period (2018–2021). RMSE, MAE, MAPE, and r2 are conducted to evaluate these models. The results demonstrate the four supervised models perform well during all three periods. ELM, XGBoost, and SVM exhibit excellent performance, while RF demonstrates good accuracy but relatively lower than the others. XGBoost’s r2 shows inconsistency with RMSE, MAPE, and MAE. This study concludes the predictive performance of RF and XGBoost is inferior to that of other models. Full article

Our research is dedicated to developing sustainable business models (SBMs). In this study, we review numerous empirical articles, reviews, and papers on SBMs, including 17,412 SCIE articles and 17,237 SSCI papers, published between 2009 and 2023. Our research provides guidance on how to achieve and maintain sustainability. We identify the most effective practices for conceptualizing an SBM. Our citations of over 130 articles highlight the importance of integrating corporate actions and consequences across the environmental, societal, and economic spheres, while also considering stakeholder engagement and long-term perspectives. We also emphasize the need to move beyond the traditional dichotomous treatment of SBMs and reflect more contemporary practices. To provide a more practical explanation, we use fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis to predict the future evolution of SBMs from a corporate responsibility perspective, drawing on the lessons of the China phenomenon. This approach clarifies how the theoretical and practical elements obtained from the literature correspond with the new SBMs. Full article
