Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Digitalization is having a substantial impact on the economy and society and making our daily activities dependent on innovativeness and use of digital technologies.  Digital transformation has the potential to foster the economies to shift to a more sustainable development and low carbon economies. Digital technologies are being applied in socioeconomic, environment, climate change, and sustainable problems in order to cope with the given problems and to increase their efficiency. New patterns of production and consumption and new business models are created due to digitalization. However, there is a need for technologies and processes to be designed in line with the criteria of digitalization to foster the transition to a more sustainable economy. This requires focus and efforts not only on digitalization, but also in the environment, economy, and society. To shift to a more sustainable economy through digitalization requires the involvement of many actors, including academia.

The aim of this Special Issue is to collect theoretical and practical analyses of the digitalization of the economy and sustainability for different actors (individuals, workers, firms, regions, countries…). It aims to understand how digitalization can foster a sustainable development of the economy of different countries or regions and what are the solutions to shift to a more sustainable economy through digitalization.  This Special Issue also welcomes contributions at the methodological level presenting new ways of capturing the digitalization and sustainability of different sectors of the economy. It is also open to case studies (policies at country level, management at the firm level, local policies, etc…).

Our study explores the critical role played by organizational ambidexterity capabilities in the link between big data analytics, strategic innovation capabilities, and innovation performance. We developed a conceptual framework based on resource-based and dynamic capability views to examine the direct and indirect relationships among main variables. We used a quantitative approach to collect data from 172 Saudi IT and Telecom firms. We then employed structural equation modeling through Smart-PLS to test the study hypotheses. Our findings revealed that big data analytics and strategic innovation capabilities have a significant impact on organizational ambidexterity and then on innovation performance. Ambidexterity capability mediates between big data analytics capabilities and innovation performance and between strategic innovation capabilities and innovation performance. Our study contributes to the literature on big data and innovation. It offers valuable insights into the potential impacts of big data analytics, strategic innovation, and ambidexterity capabilities on innovation performance. It demonstrates how significantly boosting a firm’s capabilities for improved firms’ innovation performance can potentially enhance performance outcomes (e.g., competitiveness and sustainability). These findings provide managers with meaningful implications regarding the innovation performance that can be achieved by leveraging these important resources and capabilities. Full article

Linking Digital Technologies to Sustainability through Industry 5.0: A bibliometric Analysis

Industry 5.0 is a new phase of industrialization which focuses on humans, resilience, and sustainability. The importance of the research on Industry 5.0 has grown considerably and includes a range of different themes. Using a large corpus of data from Scopus, this study conducts a bibliometric review with the aim of providing a holistic overview of the research on Industry 5.0. We review 300 publications on Industry 5.0 to identify their theoretical foundations, research trajectories, and main topics, as well as to propose new research orientations. Our review is based on the integration of a co-citation analysis, historical direct citation analysis, and co-occurrence analysis. We found that most articles on Industry 5.0 have been published during 2020–2023 and focus mainly on India, China, and the United States. IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, Sustainability, and Applied Sciences are the most significant journals publishing research on Industry 5.0. Sustainable development, human-centricity, smart manufacturing, and 6G are the most frequent concepts in the Industry 5.0 domain. Full article

Digitalisation provides access to an integrated network of information that can benefit society and businesses. However, the evidence of sustainability in business is less researched. In our paper, by building up the research approach, we address the relevant gap by investigating how sustainable development goals represent the interrelationship between digitalisation and sustainability. Such research is particularly important because understandings of digitalisation and sustainability determine how different actors, including business managers and policymakers, act in response to those imperatives to develop future employees skills starting from school age. Following a multi-method approach, we have combined our analysis into two steps examining the relationship between digitalisation and sustainability. Building digital networks, business managers and policy makers using digital means can create some unique opportunities to strategically address sustainable development challenges for the United Nations Targets (SDG) to ensure higher productivity, education, and an equality-oriented society. This point of view describes the potential of digitalisation for society and businesses of the future. The authors revise the links between digitalisation and sustainability in the European Union countries by using data available in Eurostat and UNECE public databases. The two-stage methodology for the identification of the relationship between ICT and sustainability is used in the paper and a linear regression model is applied. The results showed tiers with five SDGs, focusing on business, and all these tiers are fixed in the constructed equations for each SDG. The recommended solution is statistically valid and proves the novelty of this research. Among digitalisation indicators, only mobile-cellular subscriptions and fixed-broadband sub-basket prices in part do not affect researched sustainable development indicators. Full article
