Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Environmental pollutants often occur as complex mixtures, resulting in combined exposures that can lead to additive, synergistic, or antagonistic effects. Identifying biomarkers and unraveling the molecular mechanisms associated with such exposures are critical for understanding their impact on human health and ecosystems. This Special Issue focuses on advancing our understanding of the biological effects of combined exposure to environmental pollutants, encompassing a broad range of contaminants, including heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disruptors, and emerging contaminants such as microplastics and pharmaceuticals. 

This Special Issue aims to bridge the gap between traditional single-pollutant studies and the growing recognition of mixture toxicity, emphasizing the need for comprehensive biomarker identification and mechanistic insights. Contributions will explore how combined exposures influence critical physiological and molecular processes, including oxidative stress, immune response, endocrine disruption, and epigenetic modifications. Studies employing multi-omics approaches, innovative bioassays, and in silico modeling to predict mixture toxicity and uncover regulatory pathways are particularly encouraged. 

Positioned within the existing literature on environmental toxicology, this Special Issue highlights the importance of integrating molecular and ecological perspectives to address real-world exposure scenarios. It also seeks to inform environmental policies and risk assessment frameworks by providing novel insights into the cumulative impact of pollutant mixtures.
