Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Leachate is a complex effluent formed during the decomposition of solid waste, acquiring a varied and potentially toxic composition to both the environment and living organisms, including humans. Several studies have highlighted the mechanisms of the transformation and degradation of this effluent, as well as its effects on aquatic and terrestrial organisms; however, due to its complexity, there is still much to be studied and discussed for us to understand its toxicological potential.

In this Special Issue, we invite researchers to submit their original research, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and case reports addressing a variety of topics related to the management and ecotoxicology of leachate. Some areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Chemical composition of leachate: investigation of substances present in leachate, such as metals, volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds, among others;
  • Leachate toxicity: assessment of the adverse effects of leachate on living organisms, both in laboratory tests and in natural environments;
  • Effects on the aquatic ecosystem: studies on how leachate affects water quality in receiving water bodies;
  • Impact on soil: investigation of the effects of leachate on soils adjacent to solid waste disposal sites, including soil contamination and changes in microbiota.
  • Leachate control and treatment: development and evaluation of technologies for treating leachate in order to reduce its toxicity and minimize its environmental impact.
  • Environmental monitoring: development of methods and techniques to monitor the quality of leachate and its effects on ecosystems over time;
  • Legislation and public policies: analysis of regulatory policies and solid waste management practices, aiming to identify gaps and propose measures to minimize the impacts of leachate;
  • Risk assessment: identification and quantification of risks associated with human and environmental exposure to leachate, with the aim of guiding prevention and mitigation measures.
  • Separation and Resource Utilization of Effective Components: generation, source separation, collection and transportation, pretreatment, and resource utilization.

We look forward to your contributions, which will enrich this Special Issue with a variety of perspectives and innovative discoveries.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
