Organic Walnut Cultivation in Intensive and Super-Intensive System—Sustainable Investment. Case Study: Gorj County, Romania
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The walnut plant (Juglans regia) is a commodity with a growing range. The authors of the paper note that the organic cultivation of walnut has a growing application and a great impact also economically. In the paper, pedological, value and pedoclimatic studies conducted in the depression area of Gorj district were carried out and the stages of technology of cultivation of technology in intensive and super-intensive system were presented. The authors showed that the establishment of organic walnut cultivation can bring economic benefits.
The authors showed that the establishment of an organic walnut orchard, on an area of 1 hectare, in Gorj County, Romania, is a sustainable, appropriate and suitable investment, in terms of utilizing the
agricultural potential of the land, environmental protection, and in terms of social and economic impact. The introduction in the paper is a presentation of the genre and a correct selection of literature. The material and statistical methods used in the work are described correctly. A big plus are the photos and their description and a clear map. On the other hand, for me, Table 1 is incomplete. It puzzles me why not all values for all varieties, e.g. protein content. The amount of tables and information is impressive. Very detailed information on walnut cultivation gives the feeling that the authors analyzed the experimental material very carefully and thoroughly. The conclusions in the paper are correct confirming the hypothesis in the purpose of the work.

The topic taken up is very important for practice and science. Many years of observations, experience and the presented justifications and benefits of walnut cultivation in the Romanian region of Gorji, and additionally confirmed by world literature, suggest that the cultivation of this species perfectly fits into the current environmental, ecological, economic and economic realities, including the so-called "green deal", which is slowly coming into force in the EU countries. The analysis of the profitability of cultivation in various systems fully illustrates the real benefits and risks. The article fully presents and responds to the goal set by the authors. As a reviewer, I must say that the agrotechnical side of the work is only an outline and a cursory cultivation scheme and it could be described in more detail, but it would significantly expand the typescript, so I believe that the current state should remain.

The article deals with organic walnut cultivation in intensive and super-intensive mode as a sustainable investment. The article is based largely on a review of the relevant literature. The introduction is written to the point and to the point.
However, there are some things to improve:
- keywords should not repeat words from the title of the manuscript,
for example, instead of walnut in the keywords, the Latin name Juglans regi, etc.
- it is not clearly written where the data in table 1 comes from - it should be completed, e.g. under the table
- Figure 5 is of poor quality and should be replaced
- maybe it would be worth considering the pros and cons of walnut cultivation in three ecological, social and economic dimensions. These are the three pillars on which sustainable development is based. For example, you could make a table and thus represent lines 133-166.
