Round 1

I missed the synergistic response of plants to different water and nitrogen. please clearly state the treatments in the experimental design instead of the put in the introduction section. |

This study calibrated soil hydraulic and nitrogen transport parameters using field data and presented optimum irrigation criteria and fertilizer application level for winter wheat under furrow irrigation in the region.
I appreciate great efforts made by the authors, but there are serious unclear points and much modification is required to be published. This manuscript lacks most important data to judge which treatment was the best: total amount of irrigation and yield.
In theoretical point of view, I do not see anything new to improve model to predict nitrogen transport. The authors just applied the commercial soiftware and no suggestion to improve the accuracy is made.
43 that depends --> depending
44 "realistic" rather than "accurate" would be better.
50 Is furrow irrigation to winter wheat widely practiced? In my understanding border, basin or sprinkler irrigation is quite common for wheat cultivation and all of them can be simulated with an dimensional model. Validation of HYDRUS_2D for nitrogen transport should be done under simpler, dimensional condition.
54 crop in --> crop modeled in
66 The term "model" should be used for simulation models such as HYDRUS or SWAP or governing equations such as CDE or macroscopic root water uptake model. Calibrated HYDRUS projects should be called such as "application project (or case) of HYDRUS_2D".
94 is --> was, will be --> were
103 Specify what kind of fertilizer was applied. Liquid form or compound form such as 8-8-8?
111 Not only product name, but also measurement principle such as TDR or capacitance should be written.
124 content in soil solution --> concentration in soil solution
127 The description of the study area should be located in the previous section.
144 intake --> air-entry
183 Root distribution largely affects water and nitrogen transport. Did you measure root distribution? How did you determine fr(t)?
Eq.(15) What is ET?
Eq.(16) What is ETa?
186 transpiration --> evapotranspiration. How did you calculate evapotranspiration rate?
203 Initai distributions should be presented.
209 W --> w
222 Parameter inversion should be located in materials and methods.
230 existing literature --> literatures
240 In figure captions, it is written as 2022.
285 What does "nitrate nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen were respectively >0.81, >0.73 and >0.68." mean?
291 and Table 4 Parameter values of soil hydraulic properties should not depend on fertilizer application rate. Inverse parameter estimation of soil hydraulic properties should be carried out independent from parameters of first-order and zero-order kinetic reaction coefficients.
Table 7 Root absorption amount can relatively easily measured by analyzing N in plants. Didn't you measure N in plants?
Table 7 Such large amount of denitrification may not occur under upland field. It occurs only under water-saturated condition. Does HYDRUS_2D simulate denitrification even under unsaturated condition?
304 Increase in water content itself does not change soil structure.
314 This discussion should be made for measured values, not for simulated ones.
332 Does HYDRUS_2D consider oxygen movement?

Reviewer 3 Report
1. Title and abstract - The abstract should be very clear and clearly present the originality of this work.
2. I suggest the title : Simulation effect of water and nitrogen transport under wide ridge and furrow irrigation in winter wheat using HYDRUS-2D
3. Introduction: the authors provide more technical details regarding the experimetal part. i suggest to remove this part on materials and methods section, and enrich the introduction by the same study on similair pedoclimatic context
4. The experiment design: Randomized bloc?? Or what experimental protocol used?.
5. The comparison among the different treatment is not satisfactory linked to the scientific approach.
6. Conclusion should include the main originality results proposed.
7. The authors provide the index and symbol table?
