Self-Care Planning and Sanitary Education in the Prevention of the Diabetic Foot

- Perform a daily foot examination, observing color and temperature, paying special attention to interdigital spaces where blisters, wounds, maceration, or excoriation can be found. With the help of a mirror, you should also inspect the sole and heel of the foot.
- Wash your feet with water and neutral soap without exceeding 5 min. Rinse the soap with warm water and dry carefully, especially the interdigital spaces. Pat dry, never rub.
- Do not use excessively hot water for foot washing. The water temperature should not exceed 37 °C.
- Use moisturizer after hygiene, but never between the toes due to the possibility of maceration.
- Never walk barefoot, without socks, or wear patched socks, as these increase pressure in the patched area, and change socks daily.
- Walk with wide shoes that guarantee support with a wide toe, allowing the toes to move, and wear a non-slip sole.
- Do not wear too flat shoes or very high heels.
- Renew shoes periodically.
- Do not apply heat directly to warm the feet.
- See a podiatrist to remove hyperkeratosis or ingrown nails.
- Cut the nails straight, do not rush the cut or file the nails smoothly.
- Prevent bed sheets from putting pressure on your feet.
- Raise your feet if you sit for a long time, promoting circulation.
- Control the glycemic level.
- Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
- Walk every day with comfortable and suitable footwear.
- Follow a healthy and balanced diet.
- See a healthcare professional at any sign of redness, swelling, or injury.
