Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The manuscript titled „Bioinspired Living Coating System for Wood Protection: Exploring Fungal Species on Wood Surfaces Coated with Biofinish during its Service Life” discusses the presence of various fungal species on the wood Surface covered with Biofinish coating. The study is interesting and has practical outcomes. However, the manuscript should be supplemented before publishing. First of all, the title does not correspond fully to the aim of the research given in the paper. Also, more explanations and scientific discussion are needed to give readers a complete picture of the study. Detailed comments and questions can be found in the attached file.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The topic of the research work and manuscript is really interesting, provides new information and the topic is quite novel. There are some issues to be addressed towards its quality improvement before publication. What is the number 2 in the key words?

What is the impact of this species of Aureobasidium action on the wood surface, concerning the degradation process based on the consumption of chemical components of wood?

I was wondering, are there any fungi acting on wood without gradually degrading it? Is this degradation lower than the benefit obtained from its presence?

Could you provide at least a brief state-of-the-art analysis for the used substances? for example the impact of linseed oil in wood properties, and the action of this fangus on wood substrate from any previous studies. For example what is the colour change produced in wood surface by this pigment produced by the fangus?

Is the colour change induced by the fungus melinin uniform in the surface of the specimens?(please, provide close photo of the wood surface).

In line 54, what are the most significant findings of these 3 relevant studies referred in the text?

Is the living of this fungus compatible to several other bio-coatings? Are there any studies combining linseed oil impregnation with non bioinspired/biofinish melanin film/synthetic film and which was the results? The introduction isn quite short, therefore, it would not be a problem to be enriched with significant state-of-the-art description. The scientific species names should be in italics.

What is the exact composition of biofinish coating?

In 105 line, please provide an explanation of this difference of age.

Please provide as well the DOI numbers of these references. In words with "ç", you could remove the apostrophe.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

As I have checked the authors have implemented the proposed changes in the revised version of manuscript towards the improvement of their work. Almost all the changes have been implemented and in my opinion, the manuscript is well-prepared and organized enough to be accepted for publication in this journal. I remain at your disposal for any clarification.
