The rapid advancements in 3D printing technology have opened up new frontiers in various fields, including bioinspired design, advanced materials and functional devices. The intersection of bioinspired design and 3D printing has emerged as a transformative field, offering innovative solutions to a myriad of engineering challenges, resulting in more efficient, sustainable and resilient materials. By emulating the complex and efficient structures and material systems found in nature, researchers and engineers can create advanced materials and devices with unparalleled performance and multiple functionalities. This Special Issue aims to showcase pioneering research and applications that highlight the potential of bioinspired 3D printing to revolutionize various industries. The goal is to present the latest breakthroughs in 3D printing technology and foster interdisciplinary collaborations among researchers from different areas such as manufacturing, biology, materials science and computer science.
Additionally, this Special Issue will address the current challenges in the development and implementation of bioinspired 3D-printed structures, such as material selection, design optimization, advanced process development and scalability. We aim to demonstrate the real-world impact of bioinspired 3D printing through practical applications and case studies, while also envisioning future research directions and technological advancements that could drive the field forward. By examining key topics such as bioinspired design principles, material innovation, performance evaluation and sustainability, this Special Issue seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in bioinspired 3D printing for the development of next-generation materials and structures.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Biomimetics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
