Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The construction field requires careful attention to the use of natural resources and CO2 production worldwide. Gravel and sand consumption need to be kept under control and, when possible, partially limited by urban mining and demolished concrete material. A sustainable approach is the main target for planning new structures and using low carbon-based new cementitious materials. The recycling and use of concrete in the building sectors has became a relevant concern in recent decades. The local material availability, the change in the standard requirements, and the doubtful approach of using recycled concrete in some countries need to be overcome by the recent technical and scientific findings. Buildings are a part of the built environment that need to comply with structural requirements. Furthermore, the corrosion induced by carbonation and freeze/thaw resistance are the two main durability parameters that need to be achieved. These latter parameters can be reached with adequate mix designs and dosages of the recycled concrete component, while the compressive strength is no longer an issue, if an optimized mix design is targeted. The resistance to fire is also a topic to be clarified with respect the extraordinary events in order to verify the resilience of recycled concrete. Several parts of a building may be built with recycled concrete, although quality control of the recycled concrete aggregates is necessary.

This Special Edition is addressed to researchers, construction companies, engineers, architects, technical managers, and specialists who deal with buildings and cementitious materials, mixed construction demolition waste is out the scope of the edition. The scope is to gather the actual and most recent developments and knowledge related to the recycling, as well as the mechanical and durability, properties of recycled concrete for buildings in order to further investigate and promote the reasonable use, dosage, and quality of recycled concrete aggregates within recycled concrete.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Recycled concrete aggregates’ characterization and quality control.
  • Local materials and recycled concrete.
  • Recycled concrete for buildings.
  • Mechanical and durability performance of new recycled materials.
  • Sustainable cements and recycled concrete.
  • Visual aspects and coloration of facades.
  • Insulating and acoustic properties.
  • Insulating materials with expanded recycled concrete powders.
  • Case studies.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
