Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Modern cosmetology focuses on the research of new ingredients, especially peptides, that potentially facilitate interactions between skin and the nervous system; this fascinating interconnection has its roots in their common ectodermal origin.
Accordingly, many cosmetic companies focus on the formulation of the so-called “neurocosmetics”, defined by Prof. Misery as "products applied onto the skin that are not absorbed, having activity on the cutaneous nervous system or, in general, have effects on skin mediators", by using ingredients that act mainly through following two mechanisms:
- Direct modulation on the cutaneous nerve endings, through the activation of particular cutaneous receptors dedicated to the perception of the sensation of freshness (menthol and derivatives); to the relaxation of the facial muscles; to the diminshment of wrinkles (botox-like peptides); or to the inhibition of the neuronal response to different environmental stimuli such as smog, air humidity, or temperature changes in hypersensitive skin (peptides);
- Modulation of the skin cells functions, equipped with receptors that bind neuromodulators released from skin neurons.
Although the definition of "neurocosmetics" has been explicited and the mechanisms of action of some ingredients potentially used for the formulation of this category of products, it has been erroneously attributed to a function of the biochemical regulation of consumers’ moods.
Starting from these considerations, this Special Issue "New Ingredients in Neurocosmetics" aims to clarify the definition of neurocosmetics and present new potential ingredients and technologies for the formulation of this category of products.
This overview of the current knowledge in this field is provided through original papers, reviews, and short communications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Cosmetics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
