Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Embedded systems smartly integrate hardware and software components. They sometimes are organized as systems of systems. They usually are massively connected. They often are safety critical. Applications of embedded systems are generally found in renewable energy, Industry 4.0, medical, aerospace, automotive, military applications, etc., such as, autonomous vehicle, rapid storage technology, modern aircraft, within telecommunications networks. Moreover, the quality of embedded systems is assessed by following specialized standards according to the application domain, such as Autosar, Misra C, Aspice, ISO26262 for the automotive industry, or DO-178C and DO254 for the avionic industry.
The design of such smart connected embedded systems requires advanced digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things or blockchains, to integrate a variety of modern techniques in order to improve system performance in various applications.
This Special Issue covers a wide range of challenges, technologies and state of the art for the design, development and realization of these smart and complex embedded systems and their applications; i.e., software and hardware development, with the use of advanced digital technologies, and quality assurance for critical applications.
Topics include but are not limited to:
- Real-time embedded system;
- Eco-friendly embedded systems;
- Connected embedded system;
- Synchronous programming for embedded systems;
- Co-design hardware/software for embedded systems;
- Multi-core and system-on-chip (SoC) architectures and programmation;
- Blockchain based security for embedded systems;
- Verification and validation of embedded systems;
- Virtual prototyping and simulation of embedded systems;
- Quality assessment and modeling of embedded systems;
- Model-based safety assessment of embedded systems;
- Process development of embedded systems;
- Use, interests and risks of AI for embedded systems;
- Systems engineering deployment for the development of embedded systems;
- Model-based systems engineering for embedded applications;
- Applications of embedded systems in energy, Industry 4.0, aerospace, space, drone, automotive, medicine;

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
