Encyclopedia of Urban Planning

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, urban planning theory and practice have been confronted with important contemporary issues characterizing the future of cities and landscapes. The disciplinary framework of urban planners is evolving towards the integration of relevant questions comprising adaptations to climate change, digitalization and smartness, environmental evaluation, greening, natural resources, the urban–rural interface, accessibility, and performance. In this transition, planning theory is continuously complemented with concepts and methods belonging to a variety of scientific domains. Consequently, planning practitioners are stimulated towards innovative operative pathways. The connected magmatic flow of ideas and concepts invokes more work for the consolidation of theoretical cornerstones through the proposition or revisitation of basic definitions of what urban planning is (and for) in contemporary societies. In this Topical Collection, we call for contributions exploring cutting-edge questions for urban planning theory and practice. Interested colleagues are invited to submit papers—both conceptual essays and case studies—with a specific focus on the impact on the discipline and the day-to-day professional work of urban planners.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the collection website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Encyclopedia is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
