Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The pursuit of sustainable energy has driven advancements in fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies, crucial for a low-carbon future. Fuel cells convert hydrogen into electricity, providing clean energy for various applications, while electrolyzers produce hydrogen by splitting water using renewable energy. Together, they create a cycle of clean energy generation and storage. However, challenges, such as efficiency, complexity, and cost, have slowed their adoption. Innovations in power electronic converters are addressing these issues, enhancing system performance, and expanding applications across industries. Converters are central to modern energy systems, managing energy transfer and optimizing electrical inputs. Advanced designs, materials, and control strategies have greatly improved the efficiency and reliability of these technologies, while digital twin technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are further optimizing their operation and reducing costs. These advancements have broadened the use of fuel cells and electrolyzers. In transportation, fuel cells power electric vehicles, buses, and ships, offering zero-emission solutions for heavy-duty and long-range applications. Electrolyzers are central to green hydrogen production, reducing emissions in industries such as steel manufacturing and chemical synthesis. Together with advanced power electronic converters, these technologies are unlocking new opportunities for clean energy generation, storage, and utilization, paving the way for a sustainable energy future.

This Special Issue focuses on innovations in fuel cell and electrolyzer technology, as well as the role of power electronic converters in improving efficiency and broadening applications. Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Hydrogen production, storage, distribution, transportation, and applications;
  2. Various types of fuel cells and electrolyzers;
  3. Power converter topologies for electrolyzer application;
  4. Power converter topologies for fuel cell application;
  5. Smart transformer for fuel cell and electrolyzer applications;
  6. Hardware-in-the-loop testing or real-time simulation aspects;
  7. Pre-compliance testing of electrolyzers and grid codes;
  8. Flexibility services.
