Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

At present, enterprises wishing to take account of environmental variability, as well as increasing customer requirements, should act very flexibly and, at the same time, be thrifty (defined as agile). The agile management paradigm is presently a new competition model, which came into being as a result of combining the principles of knowledge and lean management with the modern form of network industrial cooperation in the supply chain. Additionally, contemporary enterprises from the energy sector continue to seek organizational capabilities to enable them to function in the network environment, so they must adjust their strategic and operational rules to the agile behavior. The requirements of modern management, Industry 5.0 for green energy manufacturing, sustainable development or cloud management impose the requirement to use modern management concepts, new methods or intelligent and quick decision making tools, as well as an agile thinking that accompany organizational development. For this reason, the Guest Editors are inviting submissions to a Special Issue of Energies on the subject area of “Application of Management Tools in the Energy Sector". This Special Issue will deal with novel management concepts, methods, tools, and techniques for energy enterprises and chains. Topics of interest for publication include but are not limited to:

  • Energy management system;
  • Management concepts, methods, and tools in the energy sector;
  • Management tools in decision-making processes;
  • Supply chain optimization;
  • Application of IoT and/or AI for energy systems;
  • Control method of energy flow;
  • Renewable energy;
  • Demand-side management;
  • Lifecycle management.

Nowadays, the Ukrainian electricity industry is experiencing difficult conditions, as it is operating in a mode of depletion of its production potential. At the same time, the transition to sustainable and renewable energy is the necessary basis for the country’s welfare and for ensuring its energy security. Therefore, today we cannot do without the additional attraction of sources of funding from investors. The purpose of the survey is to study the pattern and effectiveness of investments and identify links and dependencies between key technical and economic parameters and investments in renewable energy sources. To achieve this goal, the authors divided the study into four successive stages, which made it possible to study the subject of the study comprehensively. As a result of the study, results have been obtained that complement the existing theoretical, methodological, and practical developments. Mathematical calculations (using the example of the largest wind power plants in the south-eastern region) revealed transparent relationships and dependencies between the critical technical and economic parameters of the WPP of South-Eastern Ukraine and investments in the wind energy sector. Among them: the installation of 1 MW of additional WPP generating capacity requires an average of EUR 1.51 million of investment resources, and the production of one additional kWh of electricity requires an investment EUR 0.42 euros; therefore, providing an additional thousand households with WPP electricity is possible with an investment of EUR 1.345 million. The functioning of Ukrainian national gas sector is directly dependent on the processes of fuel and energy resources consumption and trends in domestic and foreign markets. Nowadays, the majority of approaches and methods are formed with the obligatory use of expert assessment methods, which, in its turn, predetermines relatively subjective judgments and results. In the process of conducting a comprehensive analysis of financial and economic indicators and those reflecting the results of economic activity of gas distribution network operators functioning in the western region of Ukraine, the following approaches have been used in our study with the involvement of: Altman’s two-factor model; Altman’s five-factor model; Lis’s bankruptcy prediction model; Richard Taffler’s model; Beaver’s coefficient; Tereshchenko’s model and Matviychuk’s model; however, the existing models for diagnosing bankruptcy of enterprises are characterized by ambiguity; as for example, if Lis’s model indicates a low bankruptcy level, then other models prove the opposite situation; domestic diagnostic models need to be improved, as they were developed in the early 2000s and disregard current trends in functioning of enterprises. Since the existing models for diagnosing the bankruptcy of enterprises are characterized by ambiguity, the authors proposed and approbate their own approach to determining the level of competitiveness of gas distribution network operators. A feature of the proposed methodology is taking into account modern trends in the functioning of enterprises, taking into account the peculiarities of the activities of gas distribution network operators, and the market stage. A tangible advantage of this approach is the ability to identify the presence or likelihood of critical events at an early stage. Full article

A complex method developed to assess quality within a proposed framework and at a certain scope of measurement for circular economy (CE) quality indicators is presented. This was used to compare three different scenarios for municipal waste management systems: 1—incineration; 2—recycling and reuse of separated municipal waste and the transformation of the organic fraction into biodiesel and bio-coal; and 3—an upgraded Scenario 2 including decreased recycling of waste streams and the bioprocessing of paper/cardboard and processing the non-recycled fraction into bio-diesel, bio-coal, and second-generation biofuel. For the evaluation of the CE quality indicator, a set of technical, environmental, economic, and social elements was selected by a panel of experts, who also assigned them a qualitative assessment and weighting on the basis of the factors identified. The calculated Relative Increase in the CE indicator for the scenarios analyzed showed that Scenarios 3 and 2 are much more beneficial than Scenario 1 in technical, environmental, economic and social terms. This research uses an inductive inference approach supported by a literature study and deductive reasoning supported by a case study method. This article is based on a comprehensive literature review which was a foundation for preparation a planned research in organizations implementing the EFQM 2020 Model in order to build a strategy for sustainable development and energy conservation. EFQM is an abbreviation for the name of the European Foundation for Quality Management, a member organization associating entities interested in building lasting value and respecting the ethical principles of running a business. EFQM is headquartered in Brussels, and the partners operate in dozens of countries around the world. The case study methodology is used to present a strategic approach to environmental protection and energy conservation in terms of the EFQM 2020 Model guidelines on the example of an international manufacturing company. The main area of activity is the automotive industry, which is positioned as an innovative leader. The assessment was performed in one of the departments specializing in safety elements—elements of the braking system in the car. This business unit has many plants with different locations around the world. The results of the research show that environmental protection and efficient energy consumption are an important element of the company’s strategy. These activities permeate all areas of activity and are reflected in the implementation of management systems and tools aimed at environmental protection. A detailed analysis of the criteria and guidelines of the EFQM 2020 Model showed that each criterion includes guidelines for environmental protection and energy saving measures. Based on the analysis of the researched organization, we can conclude that the conduct in accordance with the guidelines of the EFQM 2020 Model translates into the achievement of measurable, positive results, also in the environmental area, which was the axis of consideration. The article considers the system of underground gas storage in Ukraine, the history of its development, the characteristics of regional gas storage complexes, and the current state and role of the gas group enterprises in the domestic gas market. The study also proves the significant role of Ukrainian UGS facilities in ensuring the energy security of Europe. However, their position in the European gas market depends significantly not only on the demand for gas storage services from foreign companies but also on the awareness at the state level of the importance of collective energy security manifested in energy policy regulations. To process forecasts for the development of the European gas market, an assessment of the environment of the gas storage operator of Ukraine was carried out using PESTEL and SWOT analysis. As a result, pessimistic, realistic, and optimistic scenarios for using underground gas storage facilities in Ukraine have been formed. Full article
