Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Renewable energy integration into AC residential grids along with storage systems is a hot topic of power electronics today. Its growth requires a new generation of high-performance power electronic DC/AC converters applicable for AC residential grids. The price, universal usability, reliability, efficiency, and proper control algorithms are key issues to be solved. This Special Issue is devoted to the state of art review of novel or recently proposed DC/AC converters for storage and renewable energy application. The main focus will be devoted to the feasibility study of the proposed solutions through the acquisition of new knowledge in areas related to power circuit design, control and implementation of advanced materials and active and passive components, and comparative analysis.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Rapid developments in energy storage and conversion technologies have led to the proliferation of low- and medium-power electric vehicles. Their regular operation typically requires an on-board battery charger that features small dimensions, high efficiency and power quality. This paper analyses an interleaved step-down single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC) operating in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) for charging of battery-powered light electric vehicles such as an electric wheelchair. The required characteristics are achieved thanks to favourable arrangement of the inductors in the circuit: the input inductor is used for power factor correction (PFC) without additional elements, while the other inductor is used to provide galvanic isolation and required voltage conversion ratio. A modular interleaved structure of the converter helps to implement low-profile converter design with standard components, distribute the power losses and improve the performance. An optimal number of converter cells was estimated. The converter uses a simple control algorithm for constant current and constant voltage charging modes. To reduce the energy losses, synchronous rectification along with a common regenerative snubber circuit was implemented. The proposed charger concept was verified with a developed 230 VAC to 29.4 VDC experimental prototype that has proved its effectiveness. Full article

This paper describes a bidirectional twisted single-phase single-stage buck-boost dc-ac converter based on an output unfolding circuit. This solution is derived by the combination of an inverting buck-boost dc-dc converter and an unfolding circuit. The operation principle, component design guidelines, along with the control approach are presented. The zero-crossing distortion problem is discussed and solved by a simple approach. The simulation and experimental results confirm all theoretical statements. Loss distribution and achievable efficiency are analyzed. Finally, the pros and cons of the proposed solution, along with the most promising application field, are analyzed and discussed in the conclusion. Full article
