Topical Collection Information

The Special Issue ‘Women's Research in Smart Energy Systems’ aims to create a collection of excellent works in electrical and energy engineering led by women or mostly authored and carried out by women. It is well known that women are underrepresented in electrical engineering and in the energy field but their contribution is often very important, not only from the technical point of view but also based on their natural ability to lead research groups with a strongly cooperative approach. The ability to create a sense of belonging and to understand people comes into play when challenges get tougher.

The Special Issue will collect contributions in the field of smart grids and microgrids, in the area of advanced ICT solutions for power systems and energy systems, and in the field of cable fault detection. Applications of artificial intelligence to the energy area are very welcome, as well as contributions that consider the cross-cutting issues around the clean energy transition most countries are facing. Studies on clean mobility, zero emission vehicles, and waterborne transport are also most welcome.

Vietnam became the world’s third largest market for solar photovoltaic energy in 2020. Especially after the Vietnamese government issued feed-in tariffs for grid-connected solar photovoltaic systems, the installed capacity of solar photovoltaic applications exploded in 2019. From studies carried out in the relevant literature, it can be said that support policies are highly important for the initial development of the renewable energy industry in most countries. This is especially true in emerging countries such as Vietnam. This paper reviews the feed-in tariffs issued and deployed in different regions of Vietnam for grid-connected solar photovoltaic applications. Moreover, the paper takes a closer look at the costs of electricity production from these systems in relation to the feed-in tariffs issued in Vietnam. The results show that the gap between the levelized cost of electricity and the feed-in tariff for solar photovoltaic electricity is relatively high, particularly in regions with a lower irradiation potential. Diagnostics of power and energy systems is obviously an important matter. In this paper we present a contribution of using new methodology for the purpose of signal type recognition (for example, faulty/healthy or different types of faults). Our approach uses Bayesian functional data analysis with data depths distributions to detect differing signals. We present our approach for discrimination of pole-to-pole and pole-to-ground short circuits in VSC DC cables. We provide a detailed case study with Monte Carlo analysis. Our results show potential for applications in diagnostics under uncertainty. Full article
