Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In the last decade, Deep Learning has transformed how we process text; word embeddings have transformed the way we measure semantic similarities, language models with astonishing generation capabilities have been introduced, and neural architectures represent now the state of the art in various classification tasks.
Textual information represents also an important source of information for the Geographic Information Retrieval (GIR) task: it is necessary to process text to extract toponyms, determine the geographic scope of a document, disambiguate and geolocate text, and of course to calculate document similarities and rank them with respect to a search query.
With these premises, it is clear that recent Deep Learning techniques may have a substantial impact on the results in Geographic Information Retrieval. Therefore, to highlight the progress in this field, in this Special Issue we welcome contributions that show how Deep Learning has been applied to GIR: from toponym resolution to retrieval and classification tasks. Any submission that highlights the integration of geographical and textual knowledge via neural methods is also welcome. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Methods that leverage Deep Learning for Geographic Information Retrieval, in particular: 1. methods for ranking documents; 2. methods for query expansion
- Geographical resources built with the help of Deep Learning methods
- Neural methods for the geolocation of text
- Methods for determining the geographical scope of documents
- Toponym disambiguation using deep learning methods

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
