Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue explores the innovative use of bacteria as therapeutic agents in cancer treatment, highlighting recent advancements in molecular understanding. It delves into how specific bacteria can target and modulate the tumor microenvironment (TME), disrupt cancer cell metabolism, and stimulate immune responses. The Special Issue discusses the mechanisms by which bacteria either directly combat tumor cells or serve as vectors for delivering therapeutic molecules to targeted cancer sites. It also examines the immune activation pathways involved, as well as the role of genetically engineered bacteria in enhancing safety and specificity in treatment. The main metabolic features of immune cells and of cancer cells are focused on to underline the metabolic behavior of these cells in response to the TME. By focusing on bacterial interactions with both tumor and immune cells, this review provides insights into the therapeutic potential and challenges of this approach, such as immune tolerance and bacterial clearance. This emerging field offers a promising, multifaceted strategy for future cancer therapy innovations.
