Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Condition monitoring is one of the key aspects of production and lately, the emerging academic trend as well. It allows us to detect the state of a machine and plan for maintenance upfront. This, on the one hand, may decrease the overall costs of production by increasing total operating time (by excluding unexpected breaks). Currently, the condition monitoring is focused around a single element of bigger more complex machines, thus bearings, motors, heaters or motors are in the spotlight. Almost all mechanical devices use bearings. The larger the machine and the longer the production plant, the more bearings are part of it, and statistically more of them can fail. Therefore, in the light of the trend of creating larger more advanced factories and production sites, it is crucial to limit their downtime to a minimum. Proper condition monitoring of the included bearings may therefore be necessary. Moreover, in the time where ecology is more and more respected by the industry, heaters, heat exchangers and coolers should also have maximum cost efficiency, and aside from their internal construction, another way to increase their uptime and longevity is to monitor their condition and plan for maintenance ahead.

The automotive industry is also highly interested in internal combustion engines, gearboxes, and pneumatic actuators. The usability of an internal combustion engines is not only limited to cars or trucks. Backup generators are also built on them. In case of power loss at the site, they can be automatically turned on to fulfill the power consumption demand at least for some limited time. It is then the last line of defense against a complete shutdown of a production plant. Condition monitoring of backup generators is important and provides high availability of a device.

This Special Issue promotes current and actual trends in research on condition monitoring of internal combustion engines, bearings and gearboxes in various machines.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Machines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
