Dear Colleagues,
The development of a roadmap aimed at reducing Greenhouse Gases and Carbon footprint is one of the most urgent global challenges. As far as sustainable transport and mobility are concerned, such key goals must be addressed with a holistic approach that considers the efficient use of the energy, the climate impact as well as social implications.
The recent even more stringent emissions regulations have nurtured an increasing interest for a revolutionary automotive landscape to be attained by investing in advanced and disruptive cleaner technologies. Internal combustion engines have undergone a radical transformation aimed at enhancing their efficiency with significant emission reduction compared to the past.
The main technological breakthroughs range from advanced fuel injection systems and combustion processes to emission control enhancement and high pollutants conversion efficiency with the adoption of innovative Exhaust Aftertreatment Systems. Likewise, the use of low-carbon or zero-carbon fuels, such as Hydrogen or Nanoparticle additive fuels, plays a major role in achieving the ambitious goals set by the emission reduction targets.
Internal combustion engines are also being addressed and thoroughly investigated in various transport applications (e.g., maritime) with specific reference to electrified powertrain. Despite the potential of full electric vehicle at winning out in on-road emission, the range anxiety is currently shifting the market towards hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles where the engine pays its role either as a range extender or as one of the primary energy sources. The efficient use of the thermal engine as combined to either battery of super-capacitor is hence attracting attention and should be carefully considered when designing the vehicle energy management strategy.
With a focus on sustainability, efficiency, and vehicle technological advancements, this Special Issue aims at showcasing the latest breakthroughs that will contribute to shaping the future of mobility. Topics of interests for this publication include, but are not limited to:
- Biodiesel, ammonia, and hydrogen combustion.
- Spray analysis and mixture formation.
- Advanced combustion concepts (e.g., pre-chamber).
- CFD approaches to engine modelling.
- Data-driven engine model.
- Innovative design for consumption and emission reduction.
- Innovative solutions for combustion control.
- Advanced ATS architectures.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Machines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
