Dear Colleagues,
After more than 15 years of intense and systematic research and development activities concentrated on graphene and graphene-based materials, a high level of our current understanding about the fundamental physics and chemistry of these materials and their potential applications has been established. A number of remarkable properties, including high conductivity, enhanced mechanical properties, as well as high transparency and flexibility, have triggered investigations concerning a diverse class of applications. As recent reports show, in many application areas there is a steadily increasing transition readiness level, which is expected to transform laboratory results to market products. However, the same reports reveal long delays in the commercialization of graphene products. It is widely recognized that fabrication issues and more importantly the current inability to scale-up processes for high-quality graphene production stand as barriers to commercial success. The use of lasers in graphene growth has emerged over the last few years as a high-potential method towards tackling the above issue. Laser-assisted processes exhibit strong potential over most chemical methods because they can offer a green and low-cost approach avoiding waste streams of chemicals and time-demanding processes.
This Special Issue of Nanomaterials titled “Laser-Induced Growth of Graphene: Methods and Applications” aims to gather a collection of articles (regular and reviews) focusing on both the fundamental and technological aspects of laser-assisted graphene growth. We expect to create a focused Issue that will serve as a summary of the current state-of-the-art in this area, providing at the same time insightful aspects on the future and prospects of this technology.
The Special Issue with cover a range of activities. Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Graphene growth via the decomposition of organic compounds;
- Laser-induced reduction of graphene oxide;
- Optimization of irradiation parameters for high-quality graphene synthesis;
- Direct laser writing and patterning of graphene films;
- Fabrication of graphene devices using laser beams;
- Laser-assisted 3D printing of graphene;
- Theoretical/simulation approaches on the mechanism (photo-thermal, photo-chemical, etc.) of light–matter interactions during graphene growth.
