Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue, Preparation and Application of Biomedical Materials, will highlight global discussions and studies on avant-garde manufacturing processes and their feasibility for biomedical applications. We are looking for innovative approaches with great potential, for instance, facile and novel methods to increase stability, a strengthened responsiveness towards body microenvironments, a composite integrating multiple functions, or a drug with clinical translational potential. However, understanding the numerous possibilities of this field, we encourage you to share your ideas. Quality summaries/reviews on recent advances are welcome, as are papers on potential topics including, but not limited to: the preparation of certain category materials, advances in certain biomedical applications, or challenges and perspectives of current developments.

Research into bone tissue engineering is increasing with advances in biomaterials. Natural products of plant origin have exciting therapeutic effects through multiple targets. The purpose of this article is to review the outstanding performance of herbal-derived natural products in bone tissue engineering. We have categorized herbal-derived natural products that exert different effects in bone tissue engineering into osteogenic, vascular, chondrogenic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Natural products of plant origin are readily available and can be combined with biomaterials as bioactive molecules to complement each other and provide additional opportunities for bone tissue engineering. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities for the development of plant composite biomaterials for bone tissue engineering and highlight emerging strategies in this field. Full article
