Dear Colleagues,
The growth in the number of drivers in the last decade, and consequently in the number of vehicles, has caused that congestion has became a major concern in the road transportation; specifically, in urban areas. New policies on the part of the Governments are focused on the development of a safer, more secure and more efficient transportation systems. In this connection, one of the most important topics in the road transportation field is the development of intelligent devices and systems for improving both traffic flow and safety. New trends on perception systems can contribute to these goals as well as the development of Service Robots in an effort to increase the quality of living of citizens in metropolitan areas.
This special issue aims to disseminate recent advances on in-car sensors in order to develop advanced vehicle control systems towards a more sustainability transport. Novel theoretical approaches or practical applications of in-car sensors toward the design, development and implementation of intelligent vehicles in real and complex environments are welcomed. On the other hand, this special issue is looking for original research works on perception systems in robotics, intelligent vehicles and driver assistance systems. Contributions from Workshops in IEEE Intelligent Vehicle Symposium 2012 (IEEE IV 2012), http://www.robesafe.es/iv2012 with extended results are also welcomed.
