Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue entitled "Featured Reviews in Separation Science" aims to publish high-quality review papers in Separations, an MDPI journal with an increasing impact in the field of Analytical Chemistry. This proposal will cover a wide range of topics dealing with fundamentals of separation science as well as relevant applications of this discipline to different scientific areas.

We want to encourage scholars to present papers addressing the new trends in liquid and gas chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, and related techniques. Certainly, aspects such as advances in column technology and high-performance platforms will be of great interest to the readers of this journal. Reviews on complementary approaches such as ion mobility spectrometry and microchip-based devices will also be welcome.

Furthermore, in recent years, the marriage of separation methods with chemometrics has opened up awesome opportunities. This is another hot topic deserving review. In this regard, we want to remark on the role of experimental design in optimization as well as the use of chemometrics for the analysis of chromatographic or electrophoretic data.

Finally, experts in the application of separation methods to other scientific areas, such as environment, ecology, agricultural and food sciences, pharmaceutical research, medicine, bioanalysis, etc., are also called to present the state-of-the-art, with an overview of examples on the determination of significant families of compounds.

We hope that together we can make an excellent Issue on separation science that will be helpful for the entire scientific community.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Separations is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.

Chromatography is a powerful and generally applicable method for the analytical separation and quantification of the chemical constituents in complex mixtures because chromatographic separation can provide high selectivity by isolating all analytes from interferences. Multiway analysis based on the multilinear model is an increasingly widely used method for interference-free and fast determination of the chemical constituents also in complex mixtures because multilinear mathematical separation can provide high selectivity by extracting the pure signal of the analyte from the mixed signal of a real sample. By combining chromatographic separation with mathematical separation, multiway calibration method, multiway standard additions method, and multiway internal standard method can be established. Chromatography assisted by multiway analysis can reduce the requirements for complete chromatographic separation, save elution time, and decrease the consumption of the mobile phase, particularly when the peak coelution problem is difficult to solve. This review presents the fundamentals and analytical applications of multilinear mathematical separation in chromatography. Full article
