Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The concept of Corporate Environmental Management (CEM) is already relatively well-settled in scientific-theoretical terms, and now faces the challenge of its extensive democratization, especially in companies in developing countries. It is possible to learn from the experiences of large companies and adapt them to all sizes and sectors. This movement toward greener companies has helped achieve several of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The emergence of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (I4.0), ushering in a new era of information and automation technologies, extends the potential of CEM results, as it allows for the identification of environmental aspects and impacts more accurately, the prediction of environmental disasters and accidents increasingly in advance, the implementation of more effective environmental management systems and controls, the improvement of processes aimed at preserving the environment, the automation of training and evaluation of the workforce in relation to skills related to environmental management, etc. Therefore, I4.0 will enable the gain of precision, scale, and safety for processes, especially industrial ones, ensuring their improved environmental impacts and generating greater profitability for organizations.

In this sense, this Special Issue seeks papers addressing these themes jointly or separately developed from a variety of scientific methods (theoretical, qualitative, quantitative, or hybrids). Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Impacts of I4.0 on Corporate Environmental Management;
  • Proposals for integrating I4.0 in Corporate Environmental Management;
  • HR training on using I4.0 in Corporate Environmental Management-related processes;
  • Contributions of I4.0 and Corporate Environmental Management to the achievement of UN Development Goals;
  • Influence of I4.0 and Corporate Environmental Management on business strategy;
  • Deploying of the binomial I4.0 and Corporate Environmental Management in the supply chain;
  • Etc.

This paper addresses the concept of Sustainability 4.0 in services, which can be defined as an integrated approach that seeks to balance the dimensions of the triple bottom line (economic, social, and environmental factors) using Industry 4.0, enabling technologies to improve organizational processes. This paper aims to identify the contextual relationships between the sustainable solutions of I4.0 based on the principles and pillars of Industry 4.0 in services while using Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM). The ISM model, composed of 16 sustainable solutions, was developed based on the vision of a law firm manager and validated by 19 experts. As a result, the model presented a six-level hierarchy for sustainable solutions and classified sustainable solutions for law firms as Dependent Sustainable Solutions, Liaison Sustainable Solutions, and Independent Sustainable Solutions. Moreover, this study highlights the importance of sustainable solutions in Industry 4.0 in services, raising awareness of the need for sustainable practices in organizations. Therefore, this research contributes to the advancement of scientific knowledge, offers practical guidance for law firm managers, and promotes sustainability in Industry 4.0 in services, benefiting both academia and society. With technological advancements, there has been a significant increase in the generation of electronic waste (e-waste), leading to severe environmental consequences. Inadequate e-waste management poses obstacles to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and results in detrimental effects such as pollution, health risks, and resource depletion. Recycling and reusing are vital due to the presence of toxic and valuable elements in e-waste. However, several barriers impede effective management, including limited collection points, insufficient awareness, and inadequate policies. For this reason, this paper aims to propose drivers for developing and improving organizational actions that enhance e-waste management, enabling companies to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. Content analysis was employed as the research method to identify booster elements and systematize e-waste management drivers. Thirty-six booster elements related to SDGs 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, and 17 were identified based on 30 relevant scientific articles from Scopus and 16 sustainability reports from well-ranked companies on the New York Stock Exchange. The systematized drivers encompass recycling and treatment techniques, sustainable manufacturing and consumption, e-waste management technologies, and cooperation networks. The scientific contribution of this work lies in incorporating empirical elements into the literature and enriching the theory of sustainable practices in the electronic equipment industry. In an applied manner, this article contributes to managers who can use the proposed drivers to improve the management of e-waste, thus reducing costs and enhancing the socio-environmental performance of their companies.
