Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainability and Sustainable Development have become core issues in organisational development and improvement. In this context Quality Management principles, systems, practices and tools are of great help. There be considerable opportunities in supporting organisational sustainable development with Quality Management elements.  In this sense, this Special Issue is interested in works that study some relationships of quality approaches and sustainability. We are looking for papers with theoretical analyses, empirical studies, quantitative studies, case studies, action researches, etc. since these works deal of some form on the support, synergies, dissonances, etc between quality and sustainability in organizations.

This paper presents a methodology for quantifying the impact of Total Quality Management TQM elements on organisational strategic sustainable development, integrating within it the well-known strategic management tool of Balanced Scorecard to represent the strategic part of the organisations, and the multi-criteria technique Analytic Network Process (ANP) to identify and quantify the mentioned impact. Additionally, the application of TQM generates directly some organisational improvements—or outputs—which help model a decisional ANP network constituted by all three building blocks—TQM elements, strategic objectives and outputs—and their interrelationships. The application of the methodology to an oil firm carried out by an expert group offered, from a decision-making point of view, meaningful results that were developed following three different analyses: Global analysis, which identified the global weight of each variable; Analysis of Influences, which established sound cause–effect relationships between the variables to identify the elements—TQM and outputs—that are more important to achieve the strategic objectives; and the Integrated analysis, which pointed out which TQM elements should be fostered in order to achieve the most important sustainable strategic objectives. Finally, it is suggested to apply the methodology to other types of size and sector activity organisations, as well as to use other techniques that introduce fuzzy elements. Full article

This paper proposes the design of a conceptual model of quality assessment in European higher education institutions (HEIs) that takes into account some of the critical reflections made by certain authors in the literature regarding standards and guidelines suggested for this purpose by the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). In addition, the evaluation of the conceptual model was carried out by means of the reliable hybrid methodology MCDM-FIS (multicriteria decision making approach–fuzzy inference system) using FDEMATEL and FDANP methods (fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory and FDEMATEL-based analytic network process). The choice of these methodologies was justified by the existing interrelationships among the criteria and dimensions of the model and the degree of subjectivity inherent in its evaluation processes. Finally, it is suggested to include sustainability as a determining factor in the university context due to its great relevance in the training of future professionals. Full article

This study aims to identify and analyze the Scientific–Technical Scenario on Corporate Sustainability (STS-CS) and propose a Triple Helix-based framework for its development and guidance of future scientific and technological investments. The study was developed using a combined method of bibliometric analysis and content analysis of scientific papers and technical publications (patents, white papers, publications from public bodies, etc.). The scientific papers were searched in the Scopus database and technical publications in the Orbit Intelligence, ProQuest, and UN Global Compact platforms. The STS-CS was analyzed in light of the scientific and technical literature and experience of the authors of the study, which allowed the proposition of the framework with initiatives expanded and adapted to the domains of the Triple Helix sectors “Universities,” “Governments”, and “Organizations” through a process of enriching the good practices identified in the CS scenarios. The main academic contribution of this work is the upgrade of the scientific block of knowledge on CS based on cooperation between the sectors of Triple Helix that expands and deepens the research aimed at contributing to sustainable business development. As for the applied contributions, companies can identify business opportunities to increase their profits in a sustainable way, governments can find suggestions for public measures for the development of CS, and universities can identify recommendations for training professionals capable of managing socio-economic issues and developing partnerships with companies for the innovation and development of sustainable products and processes.
