Special Issue Information
A properly functioning and well-balanced immune system is essential for maintaining health. The immune system is not only paramount for protection from pathogens, but also associated diseases and disorders, including allergies, asthma, and autoimmunity, as well as acute and chronic inflammatory conditions. Discovering natural ways to enhance mammalian host-defense, or aid in alleviating inflammation and other immune-associated disorders is gaining much attention. Diet and nutrition can impact the immune response, and interest in using nutraceuticals and functional foods as immunomodulators in animal science and veterinary medicine is growing.
Immunomodulators can act at different levels within the host. Either causing activation or suppression of immune function. The functional changes that occur in cellular, and non-cellular immune components facilitated by nutritional supplements and functional foods can be mediated through many mechanisms. For this Special Issue, we invite original manuscripts that investigate the immunomodulatory impacts that nutraceuticals and functional foods have in mammals. Research using in vitro or in vivo models that identify new nutraceuticals, characterize new functions, or elucidate mechanisms of actions for well-known functional foods are welcomed. Papers that investigate the impacts of functional foods on the microbiome and intestinal immunity may also be considered.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Animals is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
