Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

You are cordially invited to submit your original research or review papers to this Special Issue on “Latest Trends in Renewable Energy Systems and PV-Based DC Microgrids” in Applied Sciences.

This Special Issue will focus on the recent trends and technologies in renewable energy resources, such as solar, wind, and fuel cell, which will enhance the usage of renewable energy resources to meet the current energy crisis.

This Special issue is focused on new products in the microgrid environment, storage systems, novel concepts, and their applications. Among the areas of interest are energy efficiency, system integration, fault mitigation, and control techniques.

Some specific topics include recent trends in the development of renewable energy resources, the development of DC microgrids, modeling, integration, protection techniques, modeling of PV, wind, fuel cell, power enhancement techniques, fault mitigation, energy storage systems, electric vehicle charging, and DC lighting technologies. Some new research areas, including marine technology and hybrid electric vehicles, are also welcome. Some specific new application areas include microgrids for rural electrification, PV systems for industrial applications, converter and inverter topologies for renewable energy resources, energy technologies from renewables, energy engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, the spatial allocation of renewables in remote and off-the grid systems, the supplementary role of renewables in energy production from mainland grid systems, the social perception of increasing energy sharing from renewables to national energy mixes, land use/land cover upon energy infrastructures, geomorphology specifications, as well as models’ development upon renewables’ utilization.

Objective of this special issue

This Special Issue seeks to produce a collection of papers from various disciplines, focusing on understanding how the institutional and regulatory context shapes the character of renewable energy. This Special Issue is dedicated to exploring methods and applications aiming at performing a quantitative assessment of the sustainability of design, planning, and technology solutions implemented in the domain of renewable energy. This Special Issue is an opportunity to describe visions as we enter a period of a renewable energy world.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Photovoltaic (PV) power is attracting more and more concerns. Power output prediction, as a necessary technical requirement of PV plants, closely relates to the rationality of power grid dispatch. If the accuracy of power prediction in PV plants can be further enhanced by forecasting, stability of power grid will be improved. Therefore, a 1-h-ahead power output forecasting based on long-short-term memory (LSTM) networks is proposed. The forecasting output of the model is based on the time series of 1-h-ahead numerical weather prediction to reveal the spatio-temporal characteristic. The comprehensive meteorological conditions, including different types of season and weather conditions, were considered in the model, and parameters of LSTM models were investigated simultaneously. Analysis of prediction result reveals that the proposed model leads to a superior prediction performance compared with traditional PV output power predictions. The accuracy of output power prediction is enhanced by 3.46–13.46%. Full article
