Topical Collection Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are inviting submissions to the Energies Topical Collection on “Electrical Power and Energy System: From Professors to Students.”

An electric power system is a network of electrical components deployed to supply, transfer, and use electric power. An example of a power system is the electrical grid that provides power to homes and industry within an extended area. The electrical grid can be broadly divided into the generators that supply the power, the transmission system that carries the power from the generating centers to the load centers, and the distribution system that feeds the power to nearby homes and industries.

This Topical Collection is focused on key advances in the generation, transmission, distribution, and conversion of electrical energy systems. To advance carbon neutrality policies, many countries are increasingly integrating Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) into their energy mix. However, for harnessing natural energy in power generation, RESs present challenges in output control, potentially leading to power imbalances. Such imbalances, when coupled with an excessive reliance on unpredictable RES, may necessitate the curtailment of grid-integrated renewable generation, halting production despite available capacity. This paper proposes strategies to mitigate the economic and operational efficiency impacts of increased RESs on the power grid. It focuses on the optimal operation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) and Power to Gas (P2G) technology, which flexibly converts surplus electricity into hydrogen. By employing Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) for optimization and Stochastic Programming (SP) for the management of the uncertainty of renewable energy output, this paper evaluates the anticipated benefits of BESS and P2G applications. Usually, data-driven methods require many samples and need to train a specific model for each substation instance. As different substation instances have similar fault features, the number of samples required for model training can be significantly reduced if these features are transferred to the substation instances that lack samples. This paper proposes a fault-line selection (FLS) method based on deep transfer learning for small-current grounded systems to solve the problems of unstable training and low FLS accuracy of data-driven methods in small-sample cases. For this purpose, fine-turning and historical averaging techniques are proposed for use in transfer learning to extract similar fault features from other substation instances and transfer these features to target substation instances that lack samples to improve the accuracy and stability of the model. The results show that the proposed method obtains a much higher FLS accuracy than other methods in small-sample cases; it has a strong generalization ability, low misclassification rate, and excellent application value. The Energy Management Strategy (EMS) in Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FCHEVs) is the key part to enhance optimal power distribution. Indeed, the most recent works are focusing on optimizing hydrogen consumption, without taking into consideration the degradation of embedded energy sources. In order to overcome this lack of knowledge, this paper describes a new health-conscious EMS algorithm based on Model Predictive Control (MPC), which aims to minimize the battery degradation to extend its lifetime. In this proposed algorithm, the health-conscious EMS is normalized in order to address its multi-objective optimization. Then, weighting factors are assigned in the objective function to minimize the selected criteria. Compared to most EMSs based on optimization techniques, this proposed approach does not require any information about the speed profile, which allows it to be used for real-time control of FCHEV. The achieved simulation results show that the proposed approach reduces the economic cost up to 50% for some speed profile, keeping the battery pack in a safe range and significantly reducing energy sources degradation. The proposed health-conscious EMS has been validated experimentally and its online operation ability clearly highlighted on a PEMFC delivery postal vehicle. Full article

Currently, due to its various applications, the high-performance isolated dc-dc converter is in demand. In applications where unidirectional power transfer is required, the single active bridge (SAB) is the most suitable one due to its simplicity and ease of control. The general schematic of the SAB converter consists of an active bridge and a passive bridge, which are connected through a high-frequency transformer thus isolated. The paper summarizes the behavior of this converter in its three operation modes, namely the continuous, discontinuous, and boundary modes. Later, the features of this converter, such as its input-to-output and external characteristics are discussed. Input-to-output characteristics include the variation of converter output power, voltage, and current with an input control variable i.e., phase-shift angle, whereas the external characteristic is the variation of the output voltage as a function of output current. In this discussion, the behavior of this converter in its extreme operating conditions is also examined. The features of the characteristics are elucidated with the help of suitable plots obtained in the MATLAB environment. Afterward, the specifications of a SAB converter are given and, based on the results of the analysis, a detailed design of its electrical elements is carried out. To validate the features and the design procedures presented in this paper, a prototype is developed. An element-wise loss estimation is also carried out and the efficiency of the converter has been found to be approximately equal to 93%. Lastly, the test was executed on this prototype, confirming the theoretical findings concerning this converter. Full article

Multilevel inverters are increasingly being employed for industrial applications, such as speed control of motors and grid integration of distributed generation systems. The focus is on developing topologies that utilize fewer lower-rating switches and power sources while working efficiently and reliably. This work pertains to developing a three-phase multilevel inverter that employs switching capacitors and a single DC power supply that produces a nine-stage, three-phase voltage output. A recently proposed powerful meta-heuristic technique called symbiotic organism search (SOS) has been applied to identify the optimum switching angles for Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE) from the output voltage waveform. A thorough converter analysis has also been done in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment and is validated with the real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiment results. Full article

This paper presents a comparison study between the measured solar radiations on site and the calculated solar radiation based on the most theoretical models presented in the literature up to date. Indeed, for such purposes, this paper focusses on the analysis of the data of the measured solar radiation collected on two sites in Algeria such as Tlemcen (34°52′58″ N 01°19′00″ W, elevation 842 m) and Senia (35°39′ N 0°38′ W, elevation: 77 m). In order to check the accuracy of the proposed model, the experimental collected data of the solar radiation obtained from the existing radiometric stations installed at the two locations under investigation, are compared with the estimated or predicted solar radiations obtained from the Capderou and R.Sun models, where four days under clear skies are selected from different seasons to achieve this comparison. Second, the daily averages of the experimental global solar irradiation are compared to those predicted by Mefti model for both the sites. Finally, a validation is carried out based on the obtained experimental monthly global irradiations and with those estimated by Coppolino and Sivkov models. A relative difference is used in this case to judge the reliability and the accuracy of each model for both sites. Full article

This paper focuses on the application of the direct torque control based on space vector modulation (DTC-SVM), combined with the input–output feedback linearization (IOFL) technique on a three-phase dual open-end windings induction motor (DOEWIM) fed by two dual indirect matrix converters. The main aim of integrating the non-linear technique is to overcome the main drawbacks met within the application of the conventional DTC-SVM on dual-stator induction motor (DSIM), such as the torque and flux ripples reduction, the stator harmonics current minimization, and the elimination of the common-mode voltage (CMV). Furthermore, it is proved in this paper that the proposed control on DOEWIN can ensure more flexibility versus speed reverse and variation, load torque changes, and motor parameters variation. The obtained results prove the validity of the proposed control on the studied induction motor topology in ensuring the main aforementioned advantages compared to the conventional DTC-SVM control on DSIM, which presents a promising solution, especially in industrial applications in which high-power motors are required. This paper presents a straightforward step-by-step procedure to design salient-pole synchronous generators, starting with its main specifications and finishing with all necessary data to put it on production. As most of the electricity is generated by synchronous generators, the design of these machines remains an interesting subject, but, although it is important, it is difficult to find a complete step-by-step procedure in the literature. The proposed procedure can be followed by an electrical engineer or student and, distinctively from most papers and books, all steps are presented. Such a procedure is based on analytic calculations, eventually relying on finite element simulation to verify if everything is all right and to adjust some design parameters. All calculations have been chosen to keep the design as simple as possible; otherwise, it would not be possible to present all steps and procedures. Therefore, it can be used for beginners in the art of design-synchronous generators, applied to obtain an initial design, or be adopted by any electrical engineering course, not only aiming to be an introductory electrical machine design course but mainly to enhance the students’ comprehension of synchronous machines. The results have been compared with finite element simulation, presenting very small differences. Full article
