Dear Colleagues,
Geophysical surveys provide a ground (landscape) plan of cultural remains before excavations or may be even used instead of excavations. It decreases financial expenditures and does not harm the environment. Road and plant construction, selection of areas for various engineering and agricultural aims are usually accompanied by detailed geophysical investigations. Often, detailed geophysical investigations into the ancient cultural archaeological features are conducted. Such investigations should help estimate the possible archaeological significance of the area under study and its protection.
Rapid (first results may be obtained in a few hours to several days) and reliable interpretation of magnetic data should provide protection of archaeological remains from unpremeditated destruction. Current experience indicates that practically all geophysical methods (electromagnetic, electric, magnetic, gravity, thermal, piezoelectric, and paleomagnetic) can be applied for archaeological purposes. However, geophysical anomalies from many archaeological objects are very small. The majority of the archaeological artifacts occur in a high variable geological medium. Different kinds of noise, oblique polarization of geological and archaeological targets, and sometimes rugged terrain relief influence, all complicate geophysical field analysis.
Therefore, for the processing and interpretation of archaeogeophysical data, effective and comprehensive methodologies should be applied. Geophysical studies of different types are welcome: surface, underground, airborne, and satellite.
