Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Polyphenols are a major class of natural organic compounds that are widespread in the plant kingdom. They are structurally characterized by the presence of two or more phenolic groups and can be divided into several subclasses on the basis of their chemical structure, including flavonoids, simple and condensed tannins, simple and superior organic acids, lignans, xanthones, chalcones, stilbenes, and so on. In recent decades, these kinds of compounds have been gaining more and more attention due to the discovery of new compounds, their occurrence in the plant kingdom, their importance as chemosystematic markers, and their associated biological activities which include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antimicrobial, antitumoral, anti-aging, protective, and enzyme inhibitory activities, among others. This collection of papers is focused on the importance of these compounds at various levels and intends to present recent advances in their phytochemistry, including the description of new compounds and new analytic methodologies for their extraction, isolation, and identification from complex natural matrices. In addition, studies that lead to innovative chemosystematic conclusions and new biological studies on them may be accepted, as may studies that highlight their relevance in metabolomics and show novelties and advances in the study of their biogenetic pathways. Even review papers can be submitted to this Special Issue, but these papers should really present specific and novel perspectives on these kind of compounds and not only be a collection of information that is already available in the literature. There are no restrictions on the plant origins of these polyphenols, but papers on synthetic polyphenols will not be considered.

For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
