Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Many of the advances in controlled-environment agriculture (CEA), including those in vertical farming, hydroponics, and aeroponics, among other modalities, have focused on optimizing production yields and minimizing costs, notably, due to the use of energy. Understanding plant physiology in response to environmental factors, that in CEA can be regulated, has become of paramount importance. In this Special Issue, we want to provide a forum to share knowledge beyond harvest and answer the overarching question: how plant biology in CEA impacts quality of the products during the farm-to-table interface. We welcome studies that analyze how factors such as light (quality and quantity), air flow, ambient humidity, water availability, microbial and biological communities in CEA, and many others, as well as breeding developments, result in a longer shelf life of products and/or more appealing sensory characteristics of the marketable product. Review papers providing opinions on opportunities that can be further untapped through modern technology (e.g., AI) are of special interest.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
