Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The move to Industry 4.0 will bring many advances in efficiency and productivity. The degree to which these advances are achieved will depend largely on how industrial management control systems are designed and used to achieve sustainable development. Sustainability and its further development will bring new goals and objectives to industrial processes. These will have to be established, fixed, evaluated, and corrected by control systems.

This special issue on "Industrial Management Control Systems for Sustainable Development" aims to bring together the most outstanding research and comprehensive coverage of all aspects related to management control for sustainable development, covering a wide range of technologies, tools, and techniques to generate sustainable development through industrial control mechanisms. This special issue will bring together high-quality research articles on different aspects of Management Control Systems, including the current situation and outstanding challenges in sustainable development.  Topics include, but not limited to:

  • Control modelling for sustainable development. Reviews of the state of the art, including predictions, future scenarios, or future challenges.
  • Tools of control and sustainability in industrial SMEs and supply and distribution chains.
  • Impact of the management and control of the sustainable development in the food industry, pharmaceutical, or other industries that generate high ranges of waste.

The foundation of the national economy is agriculture, agricultural modernization is the symbol of national modernization and agricultural mechanization is an important symbol of agricultural modernization. In this paper, the authors conducted an analysis of the agricultural mechanization levels of 31 provincial areas in China. In order to assess the agricultural mechanization levels of the provincial areas in China as accurately as possible, the authors adopted indicators in the year 2005, the year 2010 and the year 2015, and used the comparative static analysis method to observe the dynamic changes in the data over the three years. Eight items, including total agricultural mechanization power/grain output (10 million watts/10 k tons), number of large and medium-sized tractors/grain output (pcs/10 k tons), tractor plowing area/grain output (k hectares/10 k tons), total input of agricultural mechanization business operation/grain output (million yuan/10 k tons), total income of agricultural mechanization business operation/grain output (million yuan/10 k tons), and fuel consumption for agricultural production/grain output (hundred tons/10 k tons), were used as assessment indicators. With the gray weighted cluster assessment instrument, 31 provincial areas of China were classified into five gray categories at high development level, relatively high development level, medium development level, medium to low development level and low development level. An objective, scientific and comprehensive assessment of the cluster results was conducted in an effort to better provide references for the authorities to draft relevant policies and measures. The monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of involuntary resettlement has been implemented for over 30 years since being introduced, achieving significant results in preventing resettlement risks and safeguarding the rights and interests of the persons affected (APs). However, the situation surrounding resettlement has changed significantly over these decades, as the interests of the APs have become more diverse and their social class differentiation has become more pronounced, implying that approaches regarding the governance of resettlement risks must be adjusted. Based on the experience of China, we intend to update the original model for M&E of involuntary resettlement, proposing that the two monitoring systems for risk-susceptible groups and the APs’ development should be set up separately in the monitoring model, and specific monitoring indicators defined within each system. In terms of the evaluation model, we introduce the meta-model of evaluation to strengthen the organic relationship among various evaluation units and enhance the overall capacity of the evaluation. Furthermore, the evaluation should be implemented in general resettlement, risk-susceptible groups resettlement and APs’ development. Full article

The purpose of this study is to analyze how managers of sections that belong to the chemical industry make use of management control systems (MCS) in order to facilitate relationships between the labor force of the owner enterprise and employees of outsourced companies, through collaboration and daily bases of coworking. It intends to consider how they allocate their available resources to the contractor characteristics and how, together, they confront external factors. The research strategy is based on a case study in which the uses of MCS by the most relevant Spanish chemical contractor influence the relationship with subcontractors in terms of strategic goals, trust, risk management or performance evaluation. Findings derived from four semi-structured interviews conducted with the central contractor and three subcontractors belonging to each of the three separate activities’ categories suggest that using MCS as controlling or enabling, in this setting, can have lasting and deep effects in the alignment of subcontractors’ strategic orientation to match the contractor’s, in the unification of risk management mechanisms, in the enhanced trust and collaboration in the coworking space, as well as in the performance evaluation criteria applied.
