Topic Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the emergence of the digital economic era, the digitization of the construction industry has been extensive. Legacy characteristics of the construction industry, such as stakeholder complexity, fragmentation, low profit margins, low productivity, etc., render it ripe for digitization. In the new digital era, the construction industry is required to develop better buildings and offer better services in a shorter time and with tighter budgets. The rapid development of society requires that the construction industry move to a human-centric paradigm building on super-connectivity and aiming at sustainability and resilience, comprising the goals of the new Construction 5.0 framework. These goals propose new challenges to construction innovation and enable the improvement of its newly defined efficacy to be imperative. Under such circumstances, digital technologies promise a new path for improving construction innovation. Digital innovation implies the creation of (and a consequent change in) new market offerings, business processes, or production models resulting from the use of digital technology. Digital innovation makes an essential contribution to construction innovation within the landscape of Construction 5.0. 

The goal of this Topic is to publish research- and practice-oriented papers, as well as genuine review-oriented contributions to the body of new knowledge on subjects closely related to the goals of Construction 5.0. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Fundamental research on digital innovation in construction in the context of Construction 5.0;
  • Organizational aspects, actors, management strategies, etc., for digital innovation in construction aimed at achieving the goals of Construction 5.0;
  • Future digital capabilities for individuals, organizations, and projects in construction;
  • Roadmaps and frameworks for Construction 5.0-oriented digitalization of construction enterprises, projects, and industry;

Augmented Reality Head-Up Displays (AR-HUDs) enhance driver perception and safety, yet optimal hazard warning design remains unclear. This study examines three AR-HUD crash warning icon types (BD, BR, BW) across various turning scenarios. Using a 360-degree video-based driving simulation with 36 participants, eye-tracking metrics were collected. Results show BW icons, dynamically linked to hazards, significantly improve drivers’ pedestrian risk awareness and visual attention allocation compared to BD and BR systems. BW consistently demonstrated longer gaze duration, higher fixation counts, and shorter time to first fixation across all turns. BD and BR icons were more susceptible to lane changes, potentially diverting attention from hazards. Findings suggest prioritizing dynamic tracking warning icons over fixed-position alternatives to minimize visual competition and distraction, providing crucial insights for AR-HUD optimization in automated vehicles. In the context of Digital Construction (DC), collaborative innovation in the construction supply chain (CSC) is crucial for long-term competitiveness. However, transparent information flows and fickle market circumstances hinder enterprises from actively participating in collaborative innovation, making it challenging to establish effective incentive mechanisms. To achieve sustained and stable collaborative innovation, an evolutionary game model of collaborative innovation between core enterprises and member enterprises in the CSC under DC based on Prospect Theory is constructed. Five equilibrium scenarios and evolutionary stability strategies are analyzed, and the corresponding stability conditions are obtained. Finally, the impact of different parameters on strategy selection are analyzed by numerical simulation. The results indicate that the balance between knowledge sharing and knowledge leakage is the premise of the positive impact of DC technology on collaborative innovation. Moreover, the adjustment of gain sensitivity and loss sensitivity is the key to enhancing managerial enthusiasm for collaborative innovation. Furthermore, the design of income distribution and innovation incentives must adhere to the reciprocity principle, while subsidies from owners demonstrate a prominent positive impact on collaborative innovation. This paper systematically expounds the dynamic influence of DC technology application, knowledge spillover effects, and managerial cognitive structures while confirming the intrinsic effect of innovation incentive mechanisms. It provides substantial theoretical reference and management enlightenment for promoting the development of collaborative innovation in the CSC under DC. Full article

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is considered promising digital technology that has important opportunities for enhancing project oversight and delivering improved decision-making in the risk management domain. However, there is a limited amount of research that has evaluated AI tools’ performance in risk management. Therefore, with the intention of sustaining more accurate risk-based decision-making process in the construction industry, this paper investigates the accuracy of ChatGPT in risk management for different project types. In this context, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to each risk management sub-process were determined, and then a questionnaire that consisted of prompt templates was prepared for collecting data from ChatGPT. Afterwards, ChatGPT’s responses were evaluated by experts with focus group sessions. The findings indicate that ChatGPT has a moderate level of performance in managing risks. It provides more accurate knowledge in risk response and risk monitoring rather than risk identification and risk analysis sub-processes. This research paves the way for future studies by demonstrating an implication of ChatGPT use for risk-based decision making. In addition, gaining insight into the precision of ChatGPT in the risk-based decision-making process will empower decision-makers to establish resilience in business operations through technology-driven risk management. Digital transformation is the direction that the Chinese construction industry is moving toward. This paper aims to investigate its current status, major barriers, and potential impact. To achieve this goal, a questionnaire survey was carried out. The results show that 80% of enterprises where the industry experts work have already formulated digital transformation plans or made plans. Additionally, BIM software was the most commonly used digital technology. Furthermore, “Data Fragmentation”, “Lack of Core Technology”, “Weak Digital Infrastructure Allocation”, “Lack of Technical Personnel”, and “Lack of Technical Standards” were prominent barriers. Moreover, digital transformation was perceived to affect the procurement management mostly at a project level, and to affect the governance performance mostly at an enterprise level. These findings can provide scholars and practitioners with an in-depth understanding of digital transformation in the Chinese construction industry. They might also help policymakers formulate appropriate policies to promote digital transformation. Full article

Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT) language models such as ChatGPT have the potential to revolutionize the construction industry by automating repetitive and time-consuming tasks. This paper presents a study in which ChatGPT was used to generate a construction schedule for a simple construction project. The output from ChatGPT was evaluated by a pool of participants that provided feedback regarding their overall interaction experience and the quality of the output. The results show that ChatGPT can generate a coherent schedule that follows a logical approach to fulfill the requirements of the scope indicated. The participants had an overall positive interaction experience and indicated the potential of such a tool in automating many preliminary and time-consuming tasks. However, the technology still has limitations, and further development is needed before it can be widely adopted in the industry. Overall, this study highlights the advantages of using large language models and Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques in the construction industry and the need for further research.
