Special Issue Information
Dear colleagues,
The number of older patients with cancer is strongly increasing. Despite the fact that around 50% of new cancer cases occur in older adults, these patients are strongly underrepresented in randomized clinical trials, resulting in a poor evidence base for oncological treatments in older patients. Treatment of the heterogeneous older population can be complicated by ageing-related factors such as functional decline, cognitive impairments, comorbidity, and polypharmacy. This makes it essential to study this population in detail, and to measure ageing-related factors in clinical studies by using geriatric assessments.
This Special Issue focuses on studies specifically targeting older adults with cancer. We invite clinical studies and implementation studies as well as basic and translational research in older patients with cancer. We are especially interested in studies that focus on further individualizing treatments, such as geriatric assessment studies and biomarker studies, as well as studies focusing on patient-related outcome measures such as quality of life and functional or cognitive outcomes of treatment.
