Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Currently, the production of energy from traditional fossil sources is beginning to give way to renewable energy technologies. New technological, economic, and environmental requirements raise the question of how to make renewable energy sources a driver of sustainable development for the coming decades. Solar and wind energy, recycling of synthetic materials, and new ways for their utilization can not only significantly reduce the burden on the environment, but also give a new impetus to the development of modern industry and help to find a new balance between the needs of people and the capabilities of nature.

To enhance the international dissemination of these ideas, it is necessary to unite the efforts of researchers in the fields of traditional and modern energy, waste-free production, and ecology in multidisciplinary discussions of urgent problems of transition to the use of renewable energy. To obtain new ideas in these areas worldwide, this Special Issue, entitled “Sustainable Development Processes for Renewable Energy Technology”, is proposed for the international journal Processes. This Special Issue mainly covers original research in the fields of sustainable development, new materials manufacturing and recycling, and renewable energy. We invite you to submit your original papers to the Special Issue “Sustainable Development Processes for Renewable Energy Technology” and look forward to receiving your outstanding research.

Sustainable energy presently represents the energy of the future, which should be based on the application respecting the importance of energy priorities, increasing regional self-sufficiency, regional control of energy, and regulation of resource use. In the area of energy supply, the use of RES has been increasingly popular, mainly due to the instability in the energy market and the political situation worldwide. Paper’s ambition is to evaluate the efficiency of the selected RES use in the specific conditions of Slovakia, with the aim to achieve the EU targets. This is important due to the increasing use of RES in Slovakia. The objective of this paper is achieved through an analysis of the energy profit of the RES system, comparing the costs of the proposed solutions. The evaluation is carried out by calculating the energy and economic efficiency of three possible buildings used in the research. Using the data obtained, the results show the most suitable alternative for each building. The resulting findings provide a valuable insight for governments in identifying the best projects for RES use. The result will be methodology creation as a base for local administration and communities to elaborate plans with a goal to extend RES use. Full article

The powered roof support in a mining complex protects machines and people from the harmful effects of the rockmass. The design of the powered roof support should be strictly prepared for adverse working conditions. This especially applies to the construction of the hydraulic actuator, which is designed to transfer uncontrolled load relief. The hydraulic actuators and an adequately selected safety valve determine the requirements for safe work. The study analyses the hydraulic actuators based on the signal obtained from the dynamic impact. The signal obtained from the load of the powered roof support in the bench tests allowed us to determine the opening time of the safety valve, which is not much different than the time of the pressure increase. Until now, the valve’s operation has been primarily analysed regarding pressure increase. This research was intended to determine whether introducing the sound power method for developing powered roof support research in the near future would be helpful. The sub-piston pressure increased during bench testing, generating a dynamic impact signal. The analysed results of the sound power tests in terms of their suitability for the development of standards related to powered roof support. This paper describes a new approach to research on powered roof support. Determining the acoustic power based on bench tests for the hydraulic actuator of a powered longwall support is ground-breaking research. The research results pave the way for new technologies based on acoustic information. Full article

The installation of ground collectors often has several disadvantages for the user, despite future benefits in more ecological heating, namely the need for a large space for installation, which increases costs, and can also cause inconvenience later, for example, by keeping snow on the surface for a longer time. The goal of this paper was to find out with the help of simulations in ANSYS whether a collector with a different geometry and arrangement (vertical spiral with diameters of 6, 8 and 10 m), which would be more comfortable, cheaper, and also friendlier to the environment, would achieve performance similar to the classic geometry—meander. The initial results are relatively favorable and prove that there is room for optimization and improvement in this field. Verification of network sensitivity in all cases is 8% or less. In the current situation of the energy crisis, it is necessary to look for the possibilities of using heat pumps in cities and metropolises. The new geometry could increase the attractiveness and availability of ground source heat pumps in general, which would support efforts to reduce emissions and possibly also reduce the negative impacts of heating on the environment. The early phases of product development effect fundamental changes in products throughout their life cycle. Therefore, the objective of the investigation was to develop a simplified model that supports the process of product design simultaneously in terms of qualitative and environmental factors. The model is dedicated to the design phase in the life cycle assessment of the product (LCA). The originality of the model consists in: (i) analysis of customers’ satisfaction from qualitative alternatives of products; (ii) assessments of the environmental impact of these alternatives; (iii) definition of the importance of qualitative and environmental attributes of products; and (iv) prediction of favourable changes in products according to qualitative–environmental levels. The model was tested for photovoltaic panels (PVs). The model is mainly dedicated to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for support in making decisions in the design phases of products in their life cycles. Full article

The purpose of the software development presented in the article is to obtain detailed information about the surface of the walls in wells necessary for more efficient and safe drilling and casing of the wellbore. The developed software of the automated system “LogPWin” allows obtaining a clear idea of the mine itself, as well as reducing the time spent on processing and analyzing the model obtained during the logging process. A software product developed as a result of the work provides visualization of data coming from an acoustic profiler, giving a visual and informative idea of the object of study. The program gives detailed information about the surface of the mine’s walls through 3D modeling. It possesses the possibility of rotating and scaling the object; there is also a color palette that can be changed depending on the incoming data. The program can be applied in the oil and gas industry and mining, as well as when drilling wells for other purposes. The program interface is quite clear and simple. The structure of the program is made in such a way that it allows obtaining data for building an object not only in real time, but also through interaction with a ready-made .txt file. Full article
