Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the development of a Special Issue, “ICT Adoption for Sustainability”. This Special Issue of Sustainability aims to attract world-leading research on how households, companies, and governments adopt information and communication technologies (ICT) for improving various kinds of sustainability, i.e., ecological, economic, social, cultural, and political. Specifically, the Special Issue is addressed to scholars from social sciences, business and management research, finance and economics research, public health, corporate social responsibility and organizational studies who are willing to combine strong theoretical underpinnings and world-class empirical evidence.

Recently, ICT adoption has increasingly been recognized as crucial for growth, human progress and well-being, along with sustainable development (Hilty and Aebischer, 2015; Miller and Atkinson, 2014; Richmond and Triplett, 2018). World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum emphasizes the role of ICT adoption in sustainability, with due regard to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (ITU, 2017, 2018). The concept of sustainable information society has been explored in the global literature for several years (Berleur et al. 2010; Fuchs, 2009, 2017; Hilty and Aebischer, 2015; Hilty and Hercheui 2010; Ziemba, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019) as a new phase of information society development in which ICT are becoming key enablers of sustainability. However, some studies assess the relation between ICT adoption and sustainability as ambivalent (Grunwald, 2017). ICT adoption can pose a threat of information and digital exclusion, new social divisions and social stratification, economic diversification, loss of privacy, information and computer crimes (Echeverri and Abels, 2008; Ferro et al., 2010; Tomczyk, 2017).

Because the relation between ICT adoption and sustainability is new, not fully researched, and evolving, there is a growing academic interest in how ICT could be adopted by various society stakeholders for achieving and improving various kinds of sustainability. With this in mind, this Special Issue focuses on studies that demonstrate how companies, governments, households, and other society stakeholders could adopt ICT and achieve ecological, economic, social, cultural, and political sustainability from this adoption.

This Special Issue calls for papers in, but not limited to, the areas listed below:

  • ICT adoption for creating, enabling, and encouraging sustainable production and consumption patterns
  • ICT adoption for sustainable management, sustainable business models, financial sustainability, sustainable marketing, sustainable decision making, and sustainable education
  • Conceptualizing the contribution of ICT adoption to sustainability
  • Case studies and patterns of ICT adoption by households, business, and governments for sustainability
  • Measurement of sustainability and relations between ICT adoption and sustainability
  • Conceptualizing, operationalizing, and verifying a model of sustainable information society
  • Synthetic indexes for measuring a sustainable information society
  • Qualitative and quantitative approaches to digital sustainability
  • Decision support methods for modeling digital sustainability
  • Internet of things, blockchain, bog data, cloud computing, and smart technologies for sustainability

The adoption and utilization of social media as an advisory tool among smallholder farmers is relatively unexplored. Social media has the potential to enhance communication, making agricultural information easily available in the sector. This study investigated the relationship between the attributes of the diffusion of innovation theory and the socio-economic characteristics that influence social media adoption. An independent samples t-test and a one-way ANOVA were used for data analysis. The sample size was 217 smallholder farmers in the Nkomazi local municipality. The results revealed that the difference in the diffusion of innovation attributes based on gender, age, co-operative membership, and level of education had a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). The findings suggest that extension services and other stakeholders including those in the private sector and policymakers should encourage wider adoption of social media by smallholder farmers. Governments need to invest in infrastructure such as community computer labs for training and access to social media. Open-access social media platforms that allow free internet access should also be considered for development. Additionally, policymakers should consider developing guidelines that encourage online advisory services, learning and information dissemination. Full article

Applying Information and communication technologies (ICT) tools is crucial for businesses to stay competitive and sustainable. The aim of this study is to investigate the attitudes of the Hotel, Restaurant, and Catering sector (HoReCa) and wholesale companies towards using ICT tools to improve B2B communication and drive sustainable development. Through in-depth interviews with representatives from twenty HoReCa firms and seven wholesale suppliers, the ICT tool was found to be well received and could potentially improve the efficiency and sustainability of their cooperation. The hypothesis states that these sectors have significant potential to adopt novel tools to improve communication channels and make their logistics operations more sustainable. As part of the Incubator of Innovation 4.0 project grant at Gdynia Maritime University, a mobile application was developed to support the development of sustainable supply chains that minimize environmental impact, support long-term economic viability, and improve warehouse management and distribution channels for services and goods. This tool could facilitate the streamlining of processes and enable stakeholders to adapt to dynamic changes in the socio-economic environment, ultimately leading to more efficient and flexible operations. This study intends to explore the extent of the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in flash-flood-prone haor (wetland ecosystem) areas of north-eastern Bangladesh. Addressing the situation of severe flash floods in 2017 at the community level, this study aims to examine the constraints and challenges in using ICT for flash flood risk management. An empirical study was conducted in two upazilas (administrative sub-districts) within the Sunamganj, the most affected district. A total of 120 household heads were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Focused group discussions (FGD) and key informant interviews (KII) were also used. Results reveal that people in these areas do not use computers or Internet. However, the use of mobile phones is common for communication during disasters. Illiteracy, poor quality of life, poor social capital, poor infrastructure, and poor communication with institutions are highlighted as the main constraints and challenges in the effective application of ICT in flash flood management. The results showed that the local community people of the study area receive early warning and hazards preparedness-related information through mobile phones, television, radio, and Facebook. However, the results also highlighted the constraints and challenges in applying ICT in DRR at the community level. By addressing a remote region and a relatively less focused disaster (flash flood), this study contributes to boosting the application of ICT in DRR, especially in remote, disadvantaged communities. The adoption of mobile Internet technology (MIT) in organizational systems is rapidly increasing. MIT has developed agricultural structures and dramatically altered farming activities to improve agricultural systems. MIT is considered one of the most essential technologies because of its huge impact on agriculture, economy, and our daily lives. In this study, we utilized sample data from 460 wheat growers in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province of Pakistan to analyze the adoption of MIT and its impact on the promotion of wheat productivity. This study used the propensity score matching (PSM) technique to address probable self-selection bias. Existing research outcomes show that decision making, education, farm size, cooperative membership, gender, extension services, access to credit, weather forecast information, risk perception, market distance, and other factors significantly affect productivity and subsidy awareness agendas. However, outcomes signify that MIT adoption will have a significant positive impact on wheat productivity. This research concludes with a policy impact, emphasizing that it is essential to accelerate MIT adoption by wheat growers as a policy to enhance Pakistan’s agriculture or wheat productivity and food security. Sharing activities are receiving greater attention due to increasing popularity in recent years. This article focuses on how the use of digital sharing platforms by customers to share products and services helps to increase the saving of natural resources and support sustainable development. In the paper, the authors investigated the main elements affecting ICT based sharing. (1) Literature review: The theoretical part starts with the revision of definitions of sharing activities; descriptions of the links between sharing and sustainable development, policy recommendations, and relevant regulation in the field. Further on, the study emphasises key elements, including ICT ones, that are important for sharing. Finally, the authors investigate how the COVID-19 pandemic affected sharing activities in previously published studies. (2) Methods: During empirical research, the authors revised a list of 33 variables, among which are 16 indicators describing network infrastructure, internet literacy and online shopping. The study uses data for each of the 27 EU countries from 2011 to 2020. The authors investigated correlations between macroeconomics and other variables to determine key variables for the regression model. (3) Results: The authors constructed a dynamic regression model that can be applied to predict the number of participants visiting digital sharing platforms in the European Union (EU). (4) Conclusions: The study shows that, when seeking to forecast the number of visits to digital sharing platforms, it is necessary to use values of main macroeconomic and ICT variables. Among these variables, ICT based indicators are highly dominating. Full article

The aim of the paper is to present the new factors of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning system) implementation related to the usage of cloud-based and blockchain information technology and to discover potential possibilities of using cloud computing, big data, and blockchain technologies in the methodology of ERP implementation. The article covers the characteristics of the current implementation methodologies and also discusses how these technologies can be adopted in the implementation process. During the study, a literature review was carried out and survey-based interviews with project managers were performed. Previous studies examined in the literature review have some limitations. Most of them are focused on ERP performance in the cloud or measure success factors of ERP implementation. A research gap exists regarding the impact of technologies in the implementation process and the results of this process. The research shed some light on cloud computing and blockchain in ERP implementation. The conclusions are as follows: (1) Some methods of sustainable methods of ERP implementation with the use of cloud technologies, blockchain, and big data have been examined in research studies, but there is still a lack of publications with in-depth analyses of the impact of blockchain on ERP implementation success. (2) The practitioners recommended the new technologies based on cloud computing and big data in the process of ERP implementation, and more knowledge about blockchain would have a positive impact on the success of sustainable ERP implementation as well as on the willingness to adopt the new technologies. This paper presents an advanced risk management methodology which supports the planning of the revitalization process of post-mining heaps. More specifically, it supports decision-makers in the selection of the most advantageous revitalization actions with respect to the defined criteria embracing risk and cost–benefit parameters as well as different qualitative factors. This methodology was elaborated with a view to software implementation and is a good example of ICT adoption in emerging domains of application. The question is how to organize the revitalization decision process and support it with a software tool. The methodology and tool are based on three pillars: risk, cost–benefit, and qualitative criteria assessments of the considered revitalization actions in order to select the target for the implementation of the given heap. This paper presents the methodology implemented in the software as well as its validation on an extensive example. The steps described in the example allow the decision-maker to identify a target revitalization alternative. The conclusions focus on the solution’s feasibility and the software implementation and extensions. Full article

The implementation of sustainability in urban spaces has been studied for many years in different countries. Sustainability means maintaining a certain ecological status enabling longevity and durability. However, in the case of smart cities, sustainability is supported by information communication technology (ICT) adoption and implementation. In this paper, authors focus on metropolis architecture modeling and recommend positive experiences gathered by municipalities in different countries. The collected experiences and good practices concern ICT implementation for sustainable metropolis management. Authors formulated an original Model of Metropolis Ecosystem Architecture in the ArchiMate language. This model preparation required literature review and studies on ICT implementation opportunities for urban governance. The Metropolis Ecosystem Architecture Model (MEAM) is to support strategic planning and ICT eco-innovation management in the Silesian Metropolis. This significant model emphasized the metropolis stakeholders’ interests combined with ICT solutions. Full article

The purpose of this study is to verify whether increasing the intensity of ICT utilization in environmental collaboration practices (ECPs) in the supply chain has a positive impact on firms’ financial performance (FP). As such, it answers the call for investigating the moderators of firms’ FP in their environmental supply chain management. The paper presents the results of a study conducted among 500 firms located in Poland with the use of the CATI technique. The research results show that increasing the intensity of ICT utilization in ECPs, in most cases, does not affect the firms’ FP. Statistically significant relations were observed only in green design ECPs, which shows that increasing the intensity of ICT utilization in green design ECPs reduces the likelihood of revenue growth thanks to ECPs implementation. The paper fills a research gap in the moderating role of the intensity of ICT utilization in increasing financial benefits thanks to the implementation of ECPs in the supply chain. As such, it contributes to the environmental supply chain management literature. The results highlight the need for further research on the moderators of firms’ financial benefits from ECPs implementation, which should be studies in isolation but also jointly, to verify their combined effect. Also, the character of different ECPs categories should be studied to link them with the most appropriate ICT. Full article

In this article, the authors, using information-systems modeling techniques, and considering current national legal regulations, present the cloud-enabled architecture of a clinical data repository. The patient’s medical record is an important carrier of information necessary for accurate diagnosis and selection of the correct treatment process. Therefore, it is not surprising that since the beginning of the development of computer technologies, databases have been built to enable the management of a patient’s medical records. These systems were most-often deployed locally at individual healthcare units, which carried certain limitations both in terms of the security and availability of the stored information, and the possibility of exchanging it with other clinics. However, recent developments in the standardization of medical information exchange in Poland, together with the revolution in cloud computing, have opened up completely new perspectives for clinical-data-repository implementations helping to make them far more sustainable. Although, the practical aspects of implementing clinical-documentation repositories are studied both in forums of European countries and also around the world; so far, no similar research was conducted with respect to Poland. This study tries to fill that gap by proposing a flexible multi-variant cloud-enabled architecture of the system providing the services of a clinical-data repository. The goal of the work was to propose such a system architecture that allows having a system that is either cloud-agnostic, that uses specifically selected cloud services, or that is even deployable locally. Thanks to the use of cloud computing services, the implemented system is characterized by high availability, scalability, and the possibility of exchanging data between medical institutions, which enables the improvement in the quality of medical processes for the whole Polish population. Information and communication technologies (ICT) have allowed the modification of many research methods based on communication. One of them is the Delphi method, especially e-Delphi. The two main areas of application of the Delphi method are traditional forecasting, but recently also the conceptual framework development of a model or theory, especially in complex domains and those where empirical research is lacking. The aim of the study was to assess the substantive accuracy (validation) of the enterprise reputation management maturity model (CR3M) using the modified e-Delphi. The final model will be tested in selected companies in the future (in the next stage of the research). Maturity models have long been regarded as tools for assessing skills in some field. The CR3M model originally included 96 practices (in four areas: communication management, corporate social responsibility, reputational risk and quality), the implementation of which was considered to be a maturity indicator. The basis for the development of the model was the literature on the subject and the existing partial maturity models. Ten experts (five theorists and five practitioners) participated in the study and assessed the appropriateness of including practices in the model and their validity, using a 5-point Likert scale. The questionnaire consisted of three questions. In two rounds of the Delphi study, an expert consensus was reached (in accordance with a priori established indicators) regarding the retention 70 out of 96 practices originally included in the model (26 deleted). The model retained 18 practices in the area of Communication Management, 14 practices in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility, 18 practices in the field of Reputation Risk Management and 20 practices in the field of Quality Management. Modification of the maturity model-reducing the number of practices included in the model increased its applicability. At the same time, 89% of experts found the presented maturity model a useful tool for self-assessment and improvement of reputation management. The modified e-Delphi procedure can be considered as an effective methodology for validating complex conceptual models. Full article

Business sustainability is a major goal for every entrepreneur, especially women entrepreneurs. The term “business sustainability” refers to efforts that help a company’s long-term growth and competitive edge over its competitors. This study sought to empirically examine the adoption of mobile applications by women entrepreneurs as a means of business sustainability. Using the UTAUT as a theoretical model, this research examined this model and its associated hypotheses by applying structural equation modelling. The survey results from 330 women entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia show that social influence, followed by effort expectancy, has the most significant influence on the behavioural intention to use mobile applications. On the other hand, facilitating conditions were found to be an insignificant predictor of the behavioural intention of women entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia to use mobile applications. Full article

The aim of the research is to measure the extent of piracy among young adults and to relate this phenomenon to variables, such as values and time orientation. The research fits into the risk paradigm of cyber research. The research was carried out in Northern Cyprus, a country with a persistently high rate of digital piracy. The research involved 318 young adults (Mean Age: 20.9, SD: 2.47). The research process was conducted through the triangulation of three questionnaires: Piracy Risk Scale, Time Perspective Inventory, and the Values Scale. Based on the data collected, it was noted that piracy is not a rare phenomenon among young people (similar to other e-risks), and it is most common for files related to entertainment to be systematically downloaded. Digital piracy is linked to the level of digital competence, as well as hedonistic and fatalistic attitudes to time and values such as materialism and sense of honour. Despite technological developments maximising the legal circulation of cultural and other digital content, piracy has still not been completely eliminated. Full article

The article focuses on issues relating to achieving sustainable development by promoting new consumption and production patterns based, for example, on sharing resources and doing business exclusively in a digital environment. This topic is extremely important because sustainable development is a fundamental concept aimed at improving the functioning of the present and future generations. The main focus of the article is to show the role played by digital technology platforms within this concept, including in relation to consumption and production patterns. The article is based on two research methods—CATI (i.e., computer-aided telephone interviews) and regression analysis for CATREG quality variables. It has been established that digital technology platforms significantly influence the creation and development of modern business models and increase the quality and intensity of relations between various company stakeholders, which is the basis for promoting new consumption and production patterns—including those based on the sharing economy, subscription to various products and services or the functioning of virtual markets, enabling purchase and sale transactions. The study provides knowledge on the adoption of the Robotic Process Automation (RPA) technology during the COVID-19 pandemic in 110 Polish service companies. As this research was the first of its kind in Poland, the objectives of the CAWI survey were to identify the technology features of the RPA technology and the related determinants and barriers influencing the adoption of the RPA as well as to determine correlations between them. Moreover, the statistical analyses involved considering whether there were differences in the evaluation of individual RPA technology features, mainly in terms of perceived usefulness, ease of use, security and functionality. The results of the study show that almost 60% of the respondents indicated that robotization tools allowed maintaining continuity of business processes during the pandemic. The highest rated were features related to usefulness of the RPA technology. Furthermore, the analysis pointed to the most frequently indicated barriers to technology implementation that were related to nonoptimized, nonstandardized and non-digitized processes with a large number of exceptions. The study contributes to scientific knowledge and has practical implications for process automation decision-makers concerned with the adoption of the Robotic Process Automation technology. The obtained results can help them to understand the potential drivers of and barriers to the adoption of software robots by enterprises and may be an important determinant for companies’ managers in the field of implementing such solutions. Major elaborations on sustainable development relating to the general economic sphere of various issue-related areas. Surprisingly little explicit guidance presenting this topic from the organizational side exists. To fill this gap, this paper attempts to propose and verify the concept of a sustainable approach to IT project management by involving the client at the stage of choosing the project management methodology. The research scope constitute IT projects, the subject of which was the development of software commissioned by the organization. The study aims to assess how the internal perspective of sustainability in IT projects, manifested in the matching of IT project management methodology to the client, affects the overall client’s satisfaction with the IT project, its products, and results. In the study, 64 IT projects implemented in Polish SME organizations were analyzed throughout their life cycle. The study has proved that introducing and improving the internal perspective of sustainability in IT projects, by matching an IT project management methodology to the client type is one of the key factors determining the level of client satisfaction and thus the assessment of the project’s success. The evaluation was made using the Servperv method by developing a measurement instrument dedicated to the IT project management area. Researches can use the proposed approach and the Servperv measuring tool to carry out similar analyses with different sample groups across other countries. The software industry can find results valuable and useful with regard to the IT project management improvement. Full article

The paper is dedicated to factors influencing users’ adoption of sustainable cloud computing solutions. The article covers the important characteristics related to cloud computing. It also discusses how sustainable cloud computing is important for sustainability. The current state of their security and potential threats waiting for users is reviewed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of perceived usefulness, security, availability, and satisfaction on users’ adoption of sustainable cloud computing solutions. The study tested and used the adapted Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) model in the context of cloud computing solutions. The partial least square method of structural equation modeling is employed to test the proposed research model. The study utilizes an online survey to obtain data from 252 cloud computing solutions users. The data set was analyzed using SmartPLS 3 software. Results showed that the best predictor of users’ perceived usefulness and system & service quality is perceived availability, followed by perceived security. Both perceived usefulness and system & service quality predict users’ attitude and intention to use of cloud computing solutions. The findings improve understanding regarding the adoption of cloud computing solutions, and this work is, therefore, of particular interest to the IT departments and cloud computing vendors. This study uses data from the Korea business activity survey panel from 2008 to 2016 to examine the effects on the sustainable growth of firms that initially adopted Information Technology (IT) applications during 2010 to 2012 compared to those that did not. The effects are examined for four years after adoption and divided into areas such as sales, labor productivity, profitability, increases in male and female employment, wages, and exports. Because the effects of IT adoption are known to vary greatly depending on the industry, the manufacturing industry is divided into traditional, medium-tech, and hi-tech manufacturing, and the service industry is divided into the materials service and information service sectors; the effects on each sector are then observed. In addition, the propensity score matching methodology is used to overcome selection bias arising from a simple comparison between firms that began using IT and firms that did not. The results show that, although there was little impact on productivity, there were impacts on sales and employment and large differences were found between the industrial sectors. Full article
