Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), first detected in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, is the seventh coronavirus known to infect humans after the identification, in this century, of SARS and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) viruses. The lack of pre-virus immunity has led to an exponential increase in infected patients worldwide and the pandemic is one of the biggest health challenges facing humanity in the last 100 years.
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted science in 2020. Around 4% of the world’s research output was devoted to SARS-CoV-2 in 2020, according to one database, and around 6% of those indexed in PubMed, which mostly covers life sciences, were dedicated to the topic. Scientists published well over 200,000 articles about the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
In this scenario of overproduction, our goal is to develop a very specific collection of articles especially focused on clinical and epidemiological aspects that have disrupted previous knowledge on the complex interplay between viruses and human disease. Therefore, we are especially interested in, but not limited to, receiving manuscripts on the following topics:
- Epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2
- Influence of ethnicity, sex and geolocation in phenotypic expression of COVID-19
- Impact of external conditions of COVID-19 outbreak
- Exposome and viral infection
- Immune-related features of COVID-19
- COVID-19 in autoimmune and immune-mediated populations (rheumatic, systemic, organ-specific)
- Diagnosis and infection monitoring strategies
- Immunosuppressants and biological agents, friends or foes?
- Primary care
- Outpatient management
- Population-based studies
- Big data-driven COVID-19 research
- Machine learning, Deep learning and Network science for COVID-19;
- Risk assessment for enhanced surveillance
- Patient’s experience
- Electronic and digital health-related services
We welcome the submission of reviews, original research articles, short communications, systematic reviews, and case studies. High-quality submissions will be considered for a publication cost discount after completion of the manuscript review process, as recommended by the Editorial Board.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Viruses is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue
- Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
- Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
- Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
- External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
- e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
