Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Exercise performance and recovery can be enhanced through prudent training- and nutrition-based approaches. The early history of sports nutrition was based on the importance of an increased intake of carbohydrates and adequate hydration. Sports nutrition has entered a new era of investigation due to advances in technology, research designs, and data computational methods. Human system biology approaches based on multi-omics outcomes have revealed the significant influences of a wide variety of specific foods and supplements on physiological responses to exercise that were previously ignored. This Special Issue invites the submission of sports nutrition-based manuscripts that advance scientific understanding and provide novel insights on all aspects of performance and recovery. These include sports nutrition subtopics such as innovative hydration strategies, the unique metabolic influence of polyphenols, macro- and micro-nutrients, unique supplements and ergogenic aids, strategies to measure and achieve energy balance and an ideal body composition, and current insights to enhance metabolic recovery, maintain optimal immune function, mitigate muscle damage and soreness, and improve physiological responses. Manuscripts that illuminate how nutrition can influence exercise-induced genetic expression, protein upregulation and downregulation, and shifts in metabolites are also invited.

Dental Caries, Tooth Erosion and Nutritional Habits in a Cohort of Athletes: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background/Objectives: this study aimed to study the association of dental caries and erosion in athletes with dietary and oral health habits. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted at the Sports Dentistry department of a university clinic. Intraoral examination included the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS II) index and the Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE). A questionnaire was completed with sociodemographic data, and dietary and oral hygiene habits. An inferential and multivariable regression analysis was performed to study the association of dental caries and erosion with confounding variables. Results: A total of 80 athletes were included. The prevalence of dental caries and erosion was 50.0% and 40%, respectively. Significant associations were observed between self-perceived oral health and caries lesions, with “Good” (−5.01, p < 0.001) and “Very good” (−5.46, p < 0.001) perceptions linked to fewer lesions. BEWE scores revealed significant associations with meal frequency uncertainty (−12.56, p = 0.014) and uncertainty about the last dental visit (8.82, p = 0.014). Self-perceived oral health as “Good” or “Very good” was associated with lower dental erosion (p < 0.010). Other demographic and behavioral factors were not significantly associated with caries or erosion. Conclusions: this cohort of athletes exhibited a high prevalence of dental caries and erosion, with associated dietary and oral hygiene habits. These results highlight the need for targeted dietary counseling and oral health education for athletes, whose nutritional needs may lead to increased consumption of sugar-rich diets. Full article

Brussels Chicory Enhances Exhaustive Aerobic Exercise Performance and Post-Exercise Recovery, Possibly Through Promotion of Lactate Oxidation: A Pilot Randomized, Single-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Two-Way Crossover Study

Background: Brussels chicory affluent in phenolic acids could inhibit atherosclerosis; however, its effects on exercise performance and post-exercise recovery are unknown. We hypothesized that Brussels chicory could enhance exhaustive aerobic exercise performance and post-exercise recovery by promoting lactate oxidation. Methods: This is a single-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled two-way cross-over trial involving 32 untrained college students (men 18) who consumed either Brussels chicory juice (100 g of Brussels chicory containing ~130 mg phenolic acids and 180 mL fresh milk) or placebo (180 mL fresh milk) for 7 days with a 2-week washout period. On the 7th day, participants received a short-term, progressive workload, high-intensity, exhaustive aerobic exercise with the Bruce protocol. Time to exhaustion and blood lactate were evaluated after exercise. C2C12 myotubes were treated with Brussels chicory phenolic acids (0.625–10 μM) to evaluate these effects on lactate metabolism and lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) and B (LDHB), two enzymes responsible for lactate biosynthesis and oxidation, respectively. Results: Brussels chicory consumption increased time to exhaustion by 8.3% and 12.2% for men and women participants, respectively. This administration also promoted post-exercise recovery, evidenced by a reduction in blood lactate (14.5% for men and 10.6% for women). In C2C12 myotubes, Brussels chicory protocatechuic acid and caffeic acid did not affect LHDA-mediated lactate production, whereas these compounds dose-dependently promoted LDHB-mediated lactate oxidation through an enrichment of mitochondria LDHB. Conclusions: Dietary supplementation with Brussels chicory may enhance short-term, progressive workload, high-intensity, exhaustive aerobic exercise performance and post-exercise recovery in humans, possibly by accelerating LDHB-mediated lactate oxidation. Nutrition Knowledge and Perceived Dietary Requirements of Adolescent Student-Athletes: A Pilot Study

Background/Objectives: Adherence to sports-specific nutritional guidelines can help optimize athlete performance and health. However, adolescent athletes may not have adequate nutrition knowledge and understanding of specific nutritional requirements. The objective of the current study was to examine the nutrition knowledge and perceived dietary requirements of adolescent athletes. Methods: Male (n = 29, age: 15.7 ± 1.3 yrs.; height: 178.9 ± 8.3 cm; body mass: 74.7 ± 17.2 kg; body fat %: 13.9 ± 7.9%) and female (n = 15, age: 16.5 ± 1.4 yrs.; height: 169.9 ± 6.5 cm; body mass: 63.3 ± 4.5 kg; body fat %: 23.7 ± 3.8%) secondary school student-athletes completed body composition testing (hydrostatic weighing) and electronic surveys (Abridged Sports Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire (ASNKQ); self-perception of dietary energy and macronutrient requirements). Results: Athletes demonstrated poor sports nutrition knowledge, with no differences observed between sexes for the number of questions answered correctly (males: 45.1 ± 9.8% vs. females: 43.1 ± 12.7%; p = 0.57). No relationships were observed between ASNKQ scores and body composition parameters or between ASNKQ scores and self-reported perception of dietary energy and macronutrient requirements (p > 0.05). Athletes self-reported a lower perceived energy (−560 ± 1272 kcal/d; p = 0.014) and carbohydrate intake (−73 ± 376 g/d; p = 0.014) requirement compared to calculated nutritional recommendations. Athletes self-reported a higher perceived protein intake (263 ± 586 g/d; p = 0.026) requirement compared to calculated nutritional requirements. Conclusions: The current sample of adolescent athletes from the secondary school level appears to have a poor level of sports nutrition knowledge and understanding of energy and macronutrient requirements. Background: Caffeine and sodium bicarbonate individually enhance muscular endurance by delaying fatigue, but their combined effects have scarcely been studied. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the acute effects of co-ingesting caffeine and sodium bicarbonate on muscular endurance at different loads in bench press and back squat exercises. Methods: Twenty-seven recreationally trained participants (female/male: 14/14; age: 23 ± 3.6 years) were randomized to four conditions in a double-blind, crossover design: (a) sodium bicarbonate and caffeine (NaHCO3 + CAF); (b) sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3); (c) caffeine (CAF); (d) placebo (PLA); ingesting 0.3 g/kg NaHCO3, 3 mg/kg caffeine or placebo (maltodextrin). Participants performed two muscle endurance tests on bench press and back squat exercises at 65% and 85% 1RM, performing as many repetitions as possible in one set until task failure. Results: CAF increased the number of repetitions (p < 0.001; ηp2 = 0.111), mean velocity (Vmean, p = 0.043, ηp2 = 0.16), and mean power output (Wmean, p = 0.034, ηp2 = 0.15) compared to placebo. These effects were observed in back squat exercise at 65%1RM in Vmean (3.7%, p = 0.050, g = 1.144) and Wmean (5.2%, p = 0.047, g = 0.986) and at 85%1RM in Vmean (5.4%, p = 0.043, g = 0.22) and Wmean (5.5%, p = 0.050, g = 0.25). No ergogenic effects were found in NaHCO3 + CAF) or NaHCO3 conditions. Conclusions: CAF increased muscular endurance performance in male and female participants by increasing the number of repetitions, mean velocity, and power output; however, when NaHCO3 was ingested, these effects were not detected. Intake of New Zealand blackcurrant (NZBC) extract for 7 days has been shown to improve high-intensity intermittent running (HIIR) performance. Objectives: We examined the repeat response of NZBC extract on HIIR performance. Methods: Sixteen active males (age: 23 ± 3 yrs, height: 179 ± 5 cm, mass: 79 ± 11 kg, V˙O2max: 55.3 ± 5 mL∙kg−1∙min−1, velocity at V˙O2max: 17.2 ± 0.8 km∙h−1, mean ± SD) participated. Familiarized subjects completed the HIIR test at individualized exercise intensities with stages consisting of six 19 s high-intensity running bouts interspersed by 15 s of low-intensity running and 1 min of inter-stage rest. The test was repeated at increasing speeds until exhaustion, under four conditions; two with a daily dose of 600 mg of NZBC extract (CurraNZ™, providing 210 mg anthocyanins) and two with a placebo, each over 7 days. The study used a double-blind, randomized, cross-over design with a wash-out period of at least 14 days. Results: For the cohort, there were no differences between the placebo and NZBC conditions for mean heart rate (p = 0.071), mean oxygen uptake (p = 0.713), and mean lactate (p = 0.121) at exhaustion for the HIIR. The NZBC extract increased the mean total running distance and mean high-intensity running distance by 7.9% and 8.0% compared to the placebo. With NZBC extract, 8 of the 16 participants (50%) enhanced in both trials beyond the smallest worthwhile change for total running distance (≥173 m) and high-intensity running distance (≥111 m). For repeated responders, total running distance and high-intensity running distance was increased by 16.7% (95% CI [11.0, 22.4%] and 16.6% (95% CI [11.0, 22.2%]. Three participants had enhanced running performance in one trial beyond the SWC, and five participants were considered non-responders. Conclusions: This is the first study on the repeated response by an anthocyanin-rich supplement on high-intensity running performance. New Zealand blackcurrant extract can substantially enhance intermittent high-intensity running performance in consistent responders. Future work should examine dosing strategies of New Zealand blackcurrant, and whether a repeated response rate exceeding 50% can be attained. These findings suggest that NZBC extract could be beneficial for athletes participating in high-intensity team sports. Full article
