In this research work, the influence of the electrolyte hydrodynamic conditions on the corrosion mechanism of the high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) X100 steel used in the petroleum transportation pipelines was analyzed. A Rotary Cylinder Electrode (RCE) was used to simulate the hydrodynamic conditions (1000 and 5000 rpm). Mechanical, microstructural and elemental characterization tests were performed on X100 steel, and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique was used to analyze the corrosion mechanism, while the morphology of the corrosion process on the corroded surfaces was obtained by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). It was found that the increasing rotation rate (υ rot) generates a fully developed flow regime where the system was dominated by a mass transfer process and increases the kinetics of chemical and electrochemical reactions so there is an increase in the corrosion rate (CR). On the other hand, the adsorption of corrosion product films that limits the charge transfer process depended on the magnitude of the shear stress that can generate wear and roughness, as well as a greater number of anodic sites, leaving the metal exposure to the corrosive medium. Aluminum–copper alloys are commonly used in the aerospace industry due to their low density and high strength. Pitting corrosion is the major problem of Al-Cu alloys due to the presence of largely separated electrochemical potential difference phases. Microstructure refinement and phase homogenization of the alloys are believed to be the factors that contribute to decreasing the galvanic coupling between phases, hence decreasing the pitting tendency. In this work, we investigate whether microstructure refinement is the only factor that contributes to pitting or whether some other factors are involved in the pitting tendency. The investigation was conducted on two frequently used aerospace aluminum–copper alloys, Al-2024 T3 and Al-2014 T6. The surface refinement was conducted by laser surface melting, and microstructure characterization was conducted by scanning electron microscopy with an energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Phase identification before and after the laser surface melting was conducted by X-ray diffraction, while pitting tendency was measured by a polarization test in 1 molar sodium chloride solution. These experimental results revealed that the enrichment of copper in the α-matrix phase was the major contributing factor in pitting as compared to the largely believed microstructural phase refinement. The fabrication of metal oxide semiconductor heterostructures is a major way to enhance their properties in photocatalytic and antibacterial applications. In the present work, ZnO/α-Fe₂O₃, In₂O₃/α-Fe₂O₃, and SnO₂/α-Fe₂O₃ are chosen to create the heterostructure of thin films using the spray pyrolysis method. This paper compares the experimental results of the structural and morphological properties of the prepared thin layers using XRD, Raman and SEM. The X-ray diffraction shows that the obtained thin film heterostructures crystallize in a hexagonal phase of ZnO, a cubic phase of In₂O₃ and a tetragonal structure of SnO₂, with all of the preceding phases positioned on the rhombohedral phase of the hematite α-Fe₂O₃. In addition, the SEM study provided the morphology and surface structure and confirmed the presence of a highly folded, rough, uneven surface with imperfections of 20 and 65 nm for In₂O₃/α-Fe₂O₃ and SnO₂/α-Fe₂O₃. The photoactivity of the prepared materials was tested via the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye. Consequently, our findings demonstrate that the cracked surface improves the rapid absorption of contaminants and allows water to easily pass through the surface of the thin layers. Finally, the antibacterial abilities of ZnO/α-Fe₂O₃, In₂O₃/α-Fe₂O₃, and SnO₂/α-Fe₂O₃ thin films were investigated by using the agar well-diffusion technique, comparing the results to the Gram-negative of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Gram-positive of Bacillus subtilis, and these thin films were found to have high antibacterial activity. This review examines recent methodologies for fabricating nonwoven polymer materials through electrospinning, focusing on the underlying physical principles, including the effects of external parameters, experimental conditions, material selection, and primary operational mechanisms. Potential applications of electrospun polymer matrices in tissue engineering are analyzed, with particular emphasis on their utility in biomedical contexts. Key challenges in incorporating new materials into biomedical devices are discussed, along with recent advances in electrospinning techniques driving innovation in this field. Full article

The adsorption and reaction of nitric oxide (NO) molecules on the surface of the model-supported metal/oxide system, consisting of Ni nanoparticles deposited on α-Al₂O₃ (0001) in ultra-high vacuum, have been studied using in situ surface-sensitive techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. As a combination of X-ray and Auger electron spectroscopy (XPS, AES), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) techniques reveals, there is a threshold of Ni particle mean size (<d>) of c.a. 2 nm, differentiating the electron state of adsorbed NO molecules and their reaction. The main feature of Ni particles normally not exceeding 2 nm is that the NO adsorbs in the form of (NO)₂ dimers, whereas, for larger particles, the NO molecules adsorb in the form of monomers, usually characteristic for the bulk Ni substrate. This difference is demonstrated to be the main reason for the different reaction of NO molecules on the surface of Ni/alumina. The striking feature is that, in the case of ultra-small Ni particles (<d> ≤ 2 nm), the nitrous oxide (N₂O) molecules are formed upon heating as a result of the NO self-reduction mechanism, which are otherwise not formed in the case of larger Ni particles. According to DFT results, this is due to the significant synergistic impact of NO co-adsorption on the neighboring NO dissociation reaction over ultra-small Ni particles, mediated by the metal/oxide perimeter interface. The observed molecular conversion effects offer an opportunity to tune the catalytic selectivity of this and related metal/oxide systems via varying the supported metal particle size. Full article

This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the synthesis and characterization of TiO₂ coatings on glass substrates, focusing on the development of superhydrophilic, self-cleaning titania coatings using the hydrosol approach. Stringent cleaning protocols were accurately followed to ensure the pristine condition of glass surfaces prior to deposition. Various organic precursor solutions were precisely prepared and applied to the glass substrate via dip-coating, followed by subsequent thermal treatment. A range of characterization techniques, including Raman spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectroscopy, scanning and atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements, were employed to assess the properties of the coatings. The results revealed that the samples were influenced by precursor concentration and withdrawal rate, with slow speed leading to minimal alteration of transmittance. The coatings show superhydrophilic properties, as evidenced by contact angle values below 3 degrees for the thinnest films. Their thickness is approximately 13 nm with very low roughness, indicative of a smooth and uniform surface. Optimization of the deposition conditions permits the fabrication of uniform and transparent TiO₂ coatings on glass substrates, offering promising opportunities for the practical use of photoinduced self-cleaning surfaces in real-life applications. Finally, a cost analysis of scaling up the coating and mirror fabrication processes confirmed the economic feasibility of this approach for concentrated solar power (CSP) applications. Full article

A new approach to stripping surface layers from ceramics with fast atoms is proposed. The existing beam sources do not allow for a stripping rate of more than a few µm/h to be achieved. Usually, an increase in the etching rate is associated with growing flux density and energy of fast atoms, which can heat the parts of the beam source up to an inadmissible temperature. In the present work, the etching rate was significantly increased at permanent flux density and energy due to an increase in the angle of incidence of fast atoms on the product surface. An increase in the angle of incidence from zero to 80° resulted not only in an increase in the etching rate by several times but also in simultaneous polishing of the surface to a high finishing class. The mining industry often relies on the natural degradation of tailings dams to break down cyanide in wastewater. However, this method has drawbacks, including high costs due to significant water demand and variable effectiveness dependent on environmental conditions, and it is a time-consuming process. To address this issue, this study focused on preparing, characterizing, and applying a ZnO-BiOI heterostructure for cyanide removal in water. The heterojunction was thoroughly characterized using techniques such as SEM-EDX, X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, photoluminescence, and XPS scans. The photocatalytic efficacy was evaluated by degrading CN⁻-containing solutions across varying photocatalyst masses, temperatures, and initial cyanide concentrations. The results showed that 5 mg of the heterostructure completely eliminated 40 ppm of cyanide in 35 min. Increasing the catalyst mass to 15 mg significantly reduced the time for the complete degradation of 40 ppm cyanide, while 25 mg of the photocatalyst achieved cyanide removal in 35 min. The optimal temperature was found to be 50 °C, with complete cyanide removal occurring in 20 min within the temperature range of 25 °C to 70 °C. Moreover, when the cyanide concentration ranged from 40 ppm to 100 ppm, 15 mg of heterojunction catalyst achieved a 97% destruction efficiency in removing a 100 ppm cyanide solution within 35 min. These results strongly indicate that the synthesized heterojunction has the potential to serve as an effective and efficient photocatalyst for cyanide degradation in process effluents and wastewater. Despite the fact that temperature is an important condition that affects the behavior of material interfaces used in integrated circuits (ICs), such as the case for epoxy molding compound (EMC) and silicon (Si), this has not been thoroughly studied. To fill this gap, the present work aims to examine the fracture of the bi-material interfaces in multilayered semiconductor components and, more specifically, the EMC-Si, through the experimental quasi-static mode I fracture experiments conducted at different temperatures. The experiments were followed by numerical simulations using cohesive zone modeling (CZM) implemented using Abaqus. Simulation results were aimed at matching experimental data using an inverse CZM approach to determine cohesive properties such as initial stiffness and maximum traction. Experimental results revealed temperature-dependent variations in fracture behavior, with low temperature (−20 °C) showing a decrease in stiffness with values around 650 MPa/mm and a maximum tensile strength of 48 MPa; high temperature (100 °C) revealed a maximum traction and stiffness of 120 MPa and 1200 MPa/mm, respectively. A possible explanation for the results obtained at high temperatures is that temperature changes cause a significant redistribution of residual stresses in the sample and at the interfaces, reducing the stiffness at lower temperatures. Sliding angle (SA) has been widely employed to describe the sliding behaviors of water droplets on substrates. However, it does not work on highly adhesive surfaces since droplets cannot slide along the substrate even at a 90° tilt. In this work, a novel strategy has been developed to characterize the sliding/pinning behaviors based on the collision between a tilted substrate and falling droplets released from a certain height. The critical tilted angle of substrate (i.e., secondary sliding angle, SSA) and the critical releasing height (i.e., H_c) of water droplets have been introduced and measured with the help of commercial equipment (drop shape analysis, DSA). Our results indicate that SSA, H_c and the phase diagram based on the combination of them work well in describing the sliding/pinning behaviors of droplets along highly adhesive substrates. The developed strategy makes it possible to distinguish sliding/pinning behaviors of water droplets along different surfaces as well as different adhesions between them. It can act as an efficient supplement to conventional methods. Full article

This study explores the surface characteristics evaluation and performance optimization of tungsten (W)-doped vanadium dioxide (VO₂) thin films. W-doped vanadium dioxide films were deposited on B270 glass substrates using an electron beam evaporation technique combined with the ion beam-assisted deposition (IAD) method. The Taguchi method was used to analyze the performance optimization of VO₂ thin films, and L₁₆ orthogonal array design and Minitab software were used for optimization calculations. The surface roughness, visible light transmittance, infrared transmittance, and residual stress of un-doped and tungsten-doped (3–5%) VO₂ thin films are set as the quality performance indicators of thin films. The goal is to identify the key factors that affect the performance of VO₂ thin films during deposition and optimize their process parameters. The experimental results showed that a VO₂ thin film with 3% tungsten doping, an oxygen flow rate of 60 sccm, a heating temperature of 280 °C, and a film thickness of 60 nm exhibited the lowest surface roughness of 2.12 nm. A VO₂ thin film with 5% tungsten doping, an oxygen flow rate of 0 sccm, a heating temperature of 280 °C, and a film thickness of 60 nm had the highest visible light transmittance at 64.33%. When the oxygen flow rate was 60 sccm, the heating temperature was 295 °C, the film thickness was 150 nm, and the tungsten doping was 5%, the VO₂ thin film showed the lowest infrared transmittance of 31.34%. A thin film with 5% tungsten doping, an oxygen flow rate of 20 sccm, a heating temperature of 265 °C, and a film thickness of 120 nm exhibited the lowest residual stress of −0.195 GPa. Full article

This study presents a comparative analysis of titanium leaching from tionite (a byproduct of the titanium dioxide production process) and carbothermally reduced red mud (derived from aluminum residues). Tionites from the sulfate process and red mud residue are known for their environmental impacts due to their metal content and acidic/basic nature. This study explored leaching as a method to recover titanium and other metals under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions using sulfuric acid. Experiments were conducted in an autoclave with different parameter changes, like varying oxygen pressure, temperature, and reaction time to optimize metal extraction. The leaching efficiency of titanium was found to be higher in the carbothermal-reduced slag compared to tionite due to the altered mineral phases in the reduced material. XRD and SEM-EDS analyses confirmed the differing leaching behaviors, with titanium compounds in tionite showing greater resistance to dissolution. These findings highlight the importance of thermal pre-treatment for optimizing metal recovery from industrial residues. The main aim of this study is to contribute to the development of sustainable waste management solutions for tionites and red mud, emphasizing the potential of hydrometallurgical methods for metal recovery. The results are expected to inform future research and industrial applications, advancing the recovery of valuable metals while reducing the environmental footprint of titanium and aluminum residue disposal. This paper focuses on investigating the use of low-pressure oxygen plasma as a surface treatment aimed at enhancing the wettability and dyeability of cotton fabrics for use in textiles and footwear materials. Plasma activation modified the cotton fabric surfaces, increasing their affinity for polar liquids. The research thoroughly characterised the treated fabrics through a combination of analytical methods and physical testing. Plasma treatment was performed using a 13.56 MHz RF generator at 90 W power, with an oxygen flow rate of 500 sccm and a pressure of 0.30 mbar, for treatment durations of 30, 60, and 120 s. Changes in surface chemistry were analysed with XPS, while SEM was used to observe morphological changes. Static water contact angle measurements confirmed a reduction from 128.5° in untreated cotton to 25.6° in samples treated for 30 s, indicating a significant increase in hydrophilicity. Water absorption tests showed a maximum absorption capacity of 119.6% after 60 min for plasma-treated samples, compared to 65.7% for untreated cotton. Contact angle measurements verified that surface hydrophilicity increased following the treatment. Furthermore, physical tests, such as rub fastness, colourimetry, and water absorption, were carried out to evaluate improvements in wettability, dyeability, and overall performance. The results showed notable enhancements in the wetting properties of cotton textiles, enabling better absorption of water and dyes, along with improved fixation. The comprehensive characterisations provided insights into the mechanisms behind these improvements. This research offers a sustainable approach for the textile industry, as plasma technology is a dry process that enhances dyeing efficiency while maintaining fabric performance and lowering environmental impact. The acidity of anatase titania before and after KOH doping was probed by pyridine adsorption in a pulse microreactor and modeled by DFT optimization of the geometry of CO and pyridine adsorption on a periodic slab of (101) and (100) surfaces using a GGA/PBE functional and verified by an example of a single-point calculation of the optimized geometry using an HSE-06 hybrid functional. The anatase (101) surface was slightly more acidic compared to the (100) surface. Both experimental and computational methods show that the acidity of anatase surfaces decreased after KOH doping and increased after the dissociative adsorption of water. Higher acidity of Ti metal centers was indicated by the shortening of the Ti-N, Ti-C, and C-O bond lengths, increasing the IR frequency of CO and pyridine ring vibrations and energy of adsorption. The DFT calculated energy of pyridine adsorption was analyzed in terms of binding energy and the energy of lattice distortion. The latter was used to construct Hammett plots for the adsorption of 4-substituted pyridines with electron-donating and -withdrawing substituents. The Hammett rho constant was obtained and used to characterize the acidity of various metal centers of −1.51 vs. −1.46 on pristine (101) and (100) surfaces, which were lowered to −1.07 and −1.19 values on KOH-doped (101) and (100) surfaces, respectively. The mechanism of lowering surface acidity via KOH doping proceeds through the stabilization of the atomic structure of Lewis acid centers. When an alkaline metal cation binds to several lattice oxygen atoms, the surface structure becomes more rigid. The ability of Ti atoms to move toward the adsorbate is restricted. Consequently, the lattice distortion energy and binding energy are decreased. In contrast, higher flexibility of the outermost layer of Ti atoms as a result of electron density redistribution, for example, in the presence of water on the surface, allows them to move farther outward, make shorter contacts with the adsorbate, and attain higher energies of binding and lattice distortion. The mechanism of carbon nanotube unzipping on a Cu(111) surface was investigated using density functional theory calculations. Optimized structures of armchair and zigzag carbon nanotubes of various sizes were considered, and their energies were compared to those of corresponding planar graphene nanoribbons. The results demonstrate that the flat configuration on the Cu(111) surface is energetically more favorable than the tubular one. As the nanotube diameter increases, the energy difference between the tubular and flat forms decreases due to the reduction in curvature of the nanotubes. Additionally, the energy gain associated with the transformation from nanotubes to nanoribbons is more significant for the zigzag-type structure than for the armchair-type one, suggesting that zigzag carbon nanotubes open more readily on Cu(111). Hypothetical intermediate states in the nanotube-to-nanoribbon transformation were also explored, providing valuable insights into the mechanism of this process. Full article

A variety of NiP-TiC-SiC nanocomposite coatings were deposited to acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) substrates at varying plating periods and bath temperatures using electroless plating. A field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) demonstrates the production of various coating morphologies. Morphology analysis of the deposit coatings shows homogenous, compact, and nodular structured coatings free of any apparent defects in most deposition conditions, except at extra high-temperature deposition baths, some gas bubbles under the coating layers were seen. The patterns of X-ray diffraction (XRD) illustrate nickel peaks at 44.5 which relates to Ni (111). Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) data show that the coating’s main constituents are nickel, phosphorus, and nanoparticles. According to the results of the contact angle test, the potentiodynamic polarization, and the impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests conducted in (3.5%) of NaCl by weight at (25 °C), the nanocomposite coating that was created at 90 min and 75 °C exhibited the best hydrophobic qualities and corrosion resistance. The coating formed at 30 min and 75 °C illustrates the best hardness value. The adhesion force was calculated using the ASTM D 3359 method (B). The findings demonstrate that the coating made under the following deposition conditions, 30 min at 75 °C, 30 min at 95 °C, and 90 min at 75 °C, produces the best bonding strength between the coating and ABS substrate (standard classification 5B); however, the complete gas bubble rejection process from the substrate is rendered difficult by deposition times longer than 30 min in a bath over 85 °C, which decreases the adhesion between NiP-TiC-SiC and the acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene substrate. The wear rate shows a direct relationship with the coefficient of friction rather than hardness, and the coated prepared at 90 min at 75 °C offers a lower wear rate and coefficient of friction. As a promising polymer for the production of biomaterials and drug delivery systems, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is characterized by its relative hydrophobicity, as well as its chemical and biological inertness. Here, we aimed to improve the biological properties of PLA-based materials via the covalent attachment of a hydrophilic biocompatible glycopolymer, namely poly(2-deoxy-N-methacrylamido-D-glucose) (PMAG) on their surface. PMAG is a water-soluble polymer that contains glucose units in its side chains, which are responsible for good biocompatibility and the ability to attach bioactive molecules. In the developed protocol, PMAG was synthesized by controlled radical polymerization in the presence of a reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent, followed by the conversion of glycopolymer terminal dithiobenzoate functionality into a primary amino group (PMAG-NH₂). PLA-based films served as model aliphatic polyester materials for developing the surface biofunctionalization protocol. According to that, PMAG-NH₂ covalent immobilization was carried out after alkali treatment, allowing the generation of the surface-located carboxyl groups and their activation. The developed modification method provided a one-point attachment of hydrophilic PMAG to the hydrophobic PLA surface. PMAG samples, which differed by the degree of polymerization, and the variation of polymer concentration in the reaction medium were applied to investigate the modification efficacy and grafting density. The developed single-point polymer grafting approach provided the efficient functionalization with a grafting density in the range of 5–23 nmol/cm². The neat and modified polymer films were characterized by a number of methods, namely atomic force microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, ellipsometry, and contact angle measurements. In addition, an ArgGlyAsp-containing peptide (RGD peptide) was conjugated to the PMAG macromolecules grafted on the surface of PLA films. It was shown that both surface modification with PMAG and with PMAG-RGD peptide enhanced the adhesion and growth of mesenchymal stem cells as compared to a neat PLA surface. Full article

Many interesting materials in a broad range of applications have in their composition the coexistence of zinc and iron. Their characterization by XPS should identify and quantify both elements. The most intense regions for these elements Zn 2p and Fe 2p are, therefore, used to accomplish that purpose. By using sphalerite as an example of a material where Zn and Fe may coexist and using XPS with two different X radiation sources to study them, it is demonstrated that the Fe 2p region, when the iron is the minor component, may be seriously affected by the Auger Zn L₃M₁M₂₃ structure. The sphalerite (Zn_1−xFe_xS) here studied has x ≈ 0 and is a good example to show how an XPS spectrum obtained with the X-ray Al Kα, the most used radiation in monochromatic equipment, leads to a wrong assignment of the structures existing in the binding energy region of Fe 2p. The simultaneous use of Mg Kα radiation showed that the Fe 2p is below the XPS detection in this specific sample of sphalerite. Its attested absence reveals that the structure detected, when using Al Kα in the “Fe 2p” region, is assigned to a zinc Auger multiple peak and not to the expected 2p photoelectron doublet peak of iron. High-quality, reproducible tip coatings are essential for minimizing faradaic currents in electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM), especially during in situ and operando measurements. The variability inherent in manual coating methods, influenced by the operator’s skill and a lack of standardization, can lead to inconsistent results, increased research costs, and a greater workload. This study introduces an Automated Tip Coater (ATC) designed to automate and standardize the tip coating process. The ATC features a tip movement system using stepper motors, a rotation module with a DC motor, and a heating block based on a soldering iron. It is controlled by an Arduino development board, supported by motor drivers, and has a user-friendly interface with an OLED display and encoder. The ATC coating mechanism includes a redesigned plate with a reduced gap size and a milled tray to precisely control the amount of insulating material applied to the tip. A fast cyclic voltammetry test in a 0.1 M HClO₄ electrolyte demonstrated that over 75% of ATC-coated tips achieved excellent insulation with leakage currents below ±50 pA—and 30% below ±10 pA—suitable for highly sensitive experiments. Further measurements with EC-STM using the newly coated tips investigated the electrochemical behavior of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), revealing detailed atomic structures under dynamic electrochemical conditions. The ATC significantly enhances reproducibility, reduces dependency on operator skills, and lowers research costs while improving the accuracy and reliability of EC-STM measurements. Full article
